Bennett, a 6-foot-9 junior, was unstoppable underneath. Most of his shots were dunks and layups, although he did make his only 3-point attempt. He had 19 points in the first half as Arizona State put the game away early, taking a 53-36 lead at the break. Arizona State, which shot 58 percent (41 for 71) took its biggest lead at 80-40 on follow dunk by Ron Riley with 11:28 to play. The Sun Devils will play the winner of Monday’s Michigan-Tulane game in Tuesday’s semifinals. If No. 13 Michigan wins, it would mark the first time Ari zona State coach Bill Frieder faced the school he coached from 1981-89. He was forced to leave just before the 1989 NCAA tournament began when he signed to go to Arizona State. The Wolverines went on to win the national champi onship under interim head coach Steve Fisher. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Gary Gibbs, who won two-thirds of his games but not enough big ones to suit Oklahoma fans, resigned Monday as the Sooners’ coach. Gibbs, who last week denied he planned to step down, read a two-page statement after briefly discussing Friday’s game against No. 1 Nebraska. He said he was not asked to leave, and made his decision without talking with the school’s regents or athletic di rector Donnie Duncan. Gibbs has a record of 44-21-2, a .671 winning percentage. But his teams have finished no bet ter than third in the Big Eight, and they are only 2-14-1 in games against the Sooners’ biggest rivals — Texas, Colorado and Nebraska. “While we did not reach a championship level, we have achieved the 19th-best record in the country over the past five years while having the highest graduation rate of any of the Big 12 schools this past year,” he said. “Our players have represent ed the university with class at all times and I’m proud of what we have accomplished.” Gibbs said he had to ask him self, “Am I being fair to my fami ly and to the team to continue as head football coach?” “While I had intended to ask this question at the end of the season, and all of those closely involved with the program were committed to evaluating the pro gram at the end of the season, the media frenzy created by in accurate reporting last week led me to the conclusion it was in the best interest of my family and the football team to answer that question today. “The answer is I will resign my position as head football coach ef fective at the end of the season.” He said he intends to coach the team through a bowl game. The Sooners (6-4) are likely headed to the Copper Bowl on Dec. 29. To Place Your Ad In The Battalion Call 845-2696 Season Continued from Page 7 face so much adversity that it took true determination for them to finish on top again. “With all the added things these guys had to overcome-it’s remarkable,” Slocum said. “They have been the butt of distasteful jokes and they had nothing to do with the problems. They had to deal with the reality of sanctions and cute little comments from people trying to be clever. “It was like we told everyone else (in the SWC), ‘We took the challenge , and when all the smoke settled, we’d let all of you fight for second place.’ It’s grati fying because I’m so proud of the players’ reaction to this situa tion. There is a feeling of win ning and pride here.” For the graduating seniors of 1994, the undefeated season tastes especially sweet. For those whole enjoyed their fourth year on the team this fall, 1994 marked their triumph as the winningest class in A&M histo ry, including a perfect 24-0 mark at Kyle Field. “No matter what happens, this team has always had character and discipline,” senior tailback Rodney Thomas said. “The last four years, watching this team, you can see it takes a lot more than talent to win. After I go home and lay down, I’ll think about the four years and all the great memories we’ve had.” As the first game approached in early September, questions were plentiful on who would step up for the Aggies to fill gaping holes on the offensive line, in the receiving corps, in the secondary and in the defensive front. As the season moved forward, every question was answered, and in some cases, the answering player looked more appealing than the one who had departed. Adams had been snatched by the Seattle Seahawks with the 12th pick in the draft, and slated to start in his vacated defensive end position was sophomore Brandon Mitchell. When all was said and done, Mitchell had 63 tackles, including a team-leading 22 for losses. He also recorded nine sacks, second only to Arm strong’s nine-and-a-half. The 1993 offensive line, led by four seniors, anchored the of fense. The fifth member of that group, sophomore Calvin Collins became the leader of the 1994 squad. Collins played both guard and center for a unit that slowly meshed over the season, allowing only 18 sacks in 11 games. Glenn, like Adams, was an All-American performer who left behind a glaring need area, this one in the Aggies’ secondary. This time it was junior Dennis Allen to the rescue. Allen finished the year with a team-leading four interceptions and also blocked two punts, recovering one for a touchdown. The arrival of new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger from Georgia demanded the emergence of a big-play receiv er for quarterback Corey Pul- lig.
