Class of ’90, nominated their parents for
A&M Parents of the Year last winter.
Liz Benton, Parents of the Year sub-chair,
said the committee considers each applica
tion and letter of recommendation that is
submitted for each nominee.
“We read through each one of them before
we vote,” Benton said. “We try to select the

parents that deserve to be honored the most.”
Benton said the Van Duyns will be rec
ognized at many A&M functions through
out the year, including acting a.s judges at
the variety show on Parents’ Weekend in
the spring.
Donna Van Duyn said she and her hus
band, who is a Retired colonel from the Air
Force, are used to the busy life that being
parents of the year calls for.
“We’ve had very busy Air Force lives,”
Donna Van Duyn said, “so we don’t want to
be unbusy. We went to Fish Camp and the
orientations and the football game this
weekend. We find out week by week what
activities we’re going to be involved in.”
Appleton said her parents deserve the
award because of their love for A&M, its or
ganizations and its activities.
“It’s become a big family affair,” Appleton
said. “They consider themselves to be Ag
gies even though neither one of them ever
went to school here. They just assume that
they did.”
