French inmate’s
family petitioning
for his release
from Texas prison
PARIS (AP) — Family mem
bers, friends and local officials
armed with T-shirts saying
“Frenchie Come Home” have
mobilized to repatriate a local
man imprisoned in Texas for the
murder of his stepfather.
Pierryck Castellazzi, 37, re
ceived a 40-year sentence for the
slaying of Ken Churchill, a
Texas prison guard, in 1989.
Castellazzi’s mother, Evelyne
Martellon-Churchill, said she
fears for her son’s life because
she says he has been repeatedly
harassed by prison employees.
“Pierryck is not an American
and he is being held in a Texas
prison for the murder of a
Texas penitentiary employee,”
she said from her apartment
filled with baseball hats, cow
boy belts, Elvis posters and
other Americana.
Despite anxiety over her son’s
welfare, Martellon-Churchill re
ceived a letter from Pierryck on
Monday saying he was well. He
is also aware of her efforts to
bring him home, said their
lawyer, Jean-Paul Escudier.
Castellazzi was serving his
term at the Michael Unit maxi
mum security state prison in
Tennessee Colony, about 45
miles southwest of Tyler.
Martellon-Churchill wants
the U.S. government to repatri
ate her son under a Franco-
American agreement that allows
prisoners to serve their sen
tences in their home countries. ,
The mayor of Toulouse, Do
minique Baudis, has vowed to
fly to Texas as part of a "hu
manitarian mission” to press
for the transfer.
He also launched a letter
writing campaign targeting the
U.S. Embassy, as well as the
French ministers of justice and
foreign affairs.
The inmate’s supporters
have also printed T-shirts say
ing “Pierryck We’re Waiting for
You” and “Frenchie Come
Home.”
The French government Re
sponded to the impassioned ap
peal by asking Washington to I
return Castellazzi to France.
The U.S. Embassy in Paris had
no immediate comment.
Castellazzi was living with
his stepfather under a false
American identity when
Churchill’s nude body was found
in his suburban Texas home,
bludgeoned and shot to death.
Castellazzi was discovered at
the murder site but has main
tained his innocence. Lawyer
Escudier alleges that Churchill
was slain by a boyfriend
Churchill had infected with the
AIDS virus.
Escudier said he was deter
mined to prove the innocence of
his client, who he said was
caught between “a passionate
settling of scores.”
