Rockets defeat Chicago Houston makes 10 of 21 three pointers HOUSTON (AP) — The de fending world champion Hous ton Rockets impressed former world champion Chicago Bulls. Hakeem OlajuWon scored 29 points and got 14 rebounds and Kenny Smith's hot 3-point shooting led the unbeaten Rockets to a 106-83 victory Thursday night over the Bulls. That extended Houston’s winning streak to eight games to start the season. "Houston has got the same ingredients we had, and that is strong defense. And then they are also able to hit the outside shots,” Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. “They are so strong inside that when you double down, you’re going to cause others to be open. Tonight those other players hit their shots and that was the difference,'’ he said. Smith complemented Olaju- won, hitting 4 of 6 3-point bas kets and finished with 19 points. The Rockets Sank 10 of 21 3-point baskets as a team. Robert Horry was 3 for 3. "They are playing well with a lot of energy,” Scottie Pippen said. “Olajuwon is having an other great season. They are looking tough.” The numbers make the Rock ets look tough. They have a 22- game November winning streak over the last two seasons. They were 14-0 last November in a stretch when they opened the season with an NBA reebrd-ty- ing 16 straight victories. “I'm not a big guy with stats and records,” Smith said. “It’s just how the team plays that matters, and de fensively we're playing very well. We’re still kind of catch ing up with the offense.” The Rockets, who own a 20- 4 record over Chicago in the Summit, won on a night when they committed 27 turnovers. “Twenty-seven turnovers for the world champs,” Jackson said. “It was just one of those games. It was just terrible. We had a lot of open shots and just couldn’t hit them, and we paid for it in the end.” Olajuwon dominated the inside from start to finish, and Smith hit two of his 3- pointers in an early fourth- quarter run when the Rockets took command. “The first couple of games I wasn’t in the flow. I had the flu,” Smith said. “Now I’m get ting my shot down and Fm get ting some good looks and Working my way back.” Leading 72-67 at the start of the fourth period, the Rock ets blew to a 91*75 edge with 6:57 to play. "In the fourth quarter, we made the extra pass and played competitive basketball on the offensive end the way we were playing on the defen sive end,” Smith said. The Bulls, who haven’t won in the Summit since a 98-86 victory on Nov. 28, 1987, were led by Pippen’s 15 points. Dallas’ Tarpley makes successful comeback DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Mavericks coach Dick Motta knows what a healthy and fo cused Roy Tarpley Can mean to a team because he coached him a rookie before drug suspen sions and knee injuries threat ened to end his career. Tarpley and Motta have been reunited, and Tarpley paid the first of what the Mavericks hope is a series of dividends Thursday night when he led Dallas to a 96-94 decision over the Sacra "| laiOW people Were mento Kings. ■ . • J • He has a wondering if Roy way to go as far tarpley could still play" as his condL r i r / tioning is con- . cerned, but Roy larpley, forked 1 pretty Dallas Mavericks center good,” said Motta who, like Tarpley, is re turning to the Mavericks follow ing a lengthy absence. "He’s in a heck of a lot better shape than he was a week ago.” Tarpley scored 16 points, in cluding four consecutive points during a decisive fourth-quarter run, and pulled down nine re bounds to spark the Mavericks to their fourth victory in six games. “I know people wefre wonder ing if Roy Tarpley could still play,” said Tarpley, who, was dismissed by the league under terms of its anti-drug agree ment on Oct. 16, 1991 and had n't played in an NBA game since Nov. 9, 1990. “I think I showed tonight that I can still play this game. This was better than I dreamed it could be,” Tarpley said. V ?■ . Motta played Tarpley for 25 minutes, longer than was expect ed for the seven-footer who Was on his way to becoming one of the league’s premier players before collecting his third strike under the league’s anti-drug policy. Tarpley’s conditioning was set back over the summer when he suffered from stomach prob lems.
