BREAK
PITTSBURGH (AP) — If Rod
Woodson hadn’t been voted to the
NFL’s all-time team, the league
might be demanding a recount.
Woodson, single-handedly ac
counting for more scoring the
last two weeks than Pittsburgh’s
offense, returned an intercep
tion for a touchdown and forced
a fumble for another to lead the
Steelers past the Buffalo Bills
23-10 Monday night.
Gary Anderson, again the
only productive member of the
Steelers’ no-go offense, kicked
three field goals to move into
sixth place on the NFL’s
all-time list with 302 as
Pittsburgh won for the second
straight week without an offen
sive touchdown.
Woodson stepped in front of
intended receiver Bill Brooks
for a 37-yard interception re-
turii touchdown — the third of
his career — to put Pittsburgh
up 10-0 in the final minute of
the first quarter.
Later, with Buffalo down only
a touchdown after Jim Kelly’s 19-
yard scoring pass to Andre Reed,
a blitzing Woodson dislodged the
ball from Kelly near the goal line
and defensive end Gerald
Williams fell on it for his first
touchdown in nine NFL seasons.
Rookie defensive tackle
Brentson Buckner added to the
Bills’ growing frustration, block
ing a 32-yard field goal attempt
by Steve Christie later in the
fourth quarter — Christie’s first
miss in 18 attempts this season.
Anderson, who last week
kicked a field goal in overtime
after Woodson forced a critical
fumble in the Steelers’ 12-9 vic
tory over Houston, is 7-for-7 the
last two weeks, 17-for-18 this
season and 45-for-48 the last
two seasons.
While the Steelers (7-3) again
proved it’s possible to win in the
NF'L without much offense —
they’ve won three of their last
four despite scoring only two of
fensive touchdowns — the Bills
(5-5) are in desperate straits
well before the Super Bowl.
With Kelly under constant
pressure from a Steel Curtain
like Pittsburgh pass rush that
leads the NFL in sacks, the
Bills are .500 in November for
the first time since finishing
7-8 in 1987.
Sublease 1bdrm-1bth loft, Treehouse I, $440/mo. Avail

2323. WE KNOW THE FUTUREI
DALLAS (AP) — Texas Tech
has the inside track for the Cot
ton Bowl, and Red Raiders coach
Spike Dykes relishes the role.
When Baylor upended Rice
19-14 on Saturday, it left Texas
Tech in control of its own des
tiny. By winning their final two
games, against Houston on Sat
urday and TCU on Nov. 25, the
Raiders can assure themselves
the Jan. 2 spot as host of the
Cotton Bowl.
“I was happy, I really was,”
Dykes said of the Baylor victory,
which came shortly after his
own team beat Southwestern
Louisiana 39-7 in a nonconfer
ence game.
“When you control your own
destiny, you’ve got no one to
blame but yourself. We’ve never
been in that position before, in
my 10 years at Tech,” Dykes said
in a weekend telephone news con
ference with other SWC coaches.
The Raiders could even be
in a position of having the Cot
ton Bowl berth wrapped up
before they take the field
against TCU.
If Tech gets by Houston and
Texas A&M beats TCU on Sat
urday — both of which are ex
pected to happen — a Texas vic
tory over Baylor on Thanksgiv
ing Day would clinch the Cotton
Bowl for Tech regardless of how
the Raiders fare the following
day against TCU.
Such a scenario would give all
the other teams at least three
conference losses, and Tech would
advance in a multiteam tie be
cause it has never represented
the SWC in the Cotton Bowl.
Rice beat Texas Tech and
Texas to become the favorite to
go to Dallas over New Year’s,
but then lost three of its next
four games to open the door for
Tech. The Owls would have vir
tually wrapped up the Cotton
Bowl by holding off Baylor in the
fourth quarter Saturday, but
Baylor recovered two Rice fum
bles and rallied for the victory.
Texas A&M freshman Carlos Tori
upset Texas senior Ali McDonald 6-1,
3-6, 6-1 in the singles final of the
Westwood Collegiate Invitational
Sunday at the Westwood Country
Club in Austin.
The Aggies, who are ranked No.
17 in the preseason national poll,
also received good play from
freshman Jonathon Creath, who won
the consolation singles title with a 6-
0, 6-2 blasting of Texas freshman
Ricardo Derbez.
“Our freshman played extremely
well in Austin," A&M coach David
Kent said. “They tallied some ver^
good wins, and it's always fun to win
in your enemy’s backyard I'm proud
of what they accomplished this
weekend.” «
The rest of the A&M tennis team
was in Houston at Rice’s American
West Challenge Cup. Junior Blake
Arrant reached the semi-finals of the
1st flight while senior Rico Rodarte
reached the semis of the 2nd flight.
