Listserv, also called Revised Listserv, is a
network application that enables you to join
discussion groups covering just about every
topic under the sun. Whether you’re interested in
Labrador Retrievers, Shakespeare, inline skating
or vegetarianism, there's a group for you!
How Listserv works
The electronic addresses of people with a
common interest are grouped in a list stored on a
Listserv server. (Listserv servers are
located around the world. The
Texas A&M Listserv is
tamvmI.) These people
communicate with each
other (hold discussions)
by sending mail to the
list address. The
Listserv server then
distributes the mail to
every person on the
list. You can join or
leave discussions as
you wish; you can just
‘'listen” to the discus
sions; or you can actively
participate by sending mail
the list.

Listserv terminology
Keep the following terminology in mind as you
read through the information about Listserv.
Distribution list, Listserv list and list all refer to
tlx; list of persons that Listserv distributes mail
and/or program files to.
Listserv is the application as well as the server
that the list resides on. For example, labs-l
resides on the tamvmI Listserv.
List title is the title of tlx; list. For example,
“Labrador Retriever Enthusiasts List” or “Users
Groups List.”
List name is the one to eiglit character name by
which a distribution list is identified to the
server. It often ends in ”-l”. For example,
LABS-L Or UO-L.
List address is the network address to which
mail and files must be sent to be distributed to
the lisL The first part (preceding the @) of the
list address will always be the list name. The
second part (following tlx; @) is the node naxrx;
of the Listserv server. For example,
labs-l@tamvmI or uo-l@bitn]C.
Listserv address is the network address of the
Listserv server, llx; first pail of the address is
usually “Listserv.” For example,
listserv@tamvm1 or listserv@bitnic.
List owner is the pcrson(s) who has the authority
to perform list maintenance functions. This is
typically tl>e person you would contact if you’re
having a problem using the list.
Sending commands to Listserv
You can send commands to Listserv in three
ways, using tlx; commands appropriate for the
system you’re using.
• You can send tlie command as
an interactive nx;ssage.
• You can send tlx; command as
an electronic mail nx;ssage
where the text of your message
contains tlx; command you
wish to use.
• You can also send the conunand
as a non-mail File where the
content of the file is the com
mand you wish to use.
What Listserv lists are out there?
You can obtain a description of Listserv lists
by issuing the list command. Use the command
list
to receive a brief description of the lists
on the Texas A&M Listserv. If you’d
like a more detailed description
(the header portion of each list),
type
list long
Use the command
list global
to receive a brief
description of all the
Listserv lists. (A word
of caution: this is a huge
file and most Texas
A&M VM users can’t
receive it because it fills up
their disk space.)
How do I subscribe to a list?
You can subscribe to a list by using the
subscribe or signup commands. These commands
are synonymous; use either one. To join a list, use'
the command
subscribe listnarae your_narae
where “listname" is the name of the list and
"your_name'’ is your first and last names. Once the
Listserv processes your request, you’ll receive a
message welcoming you to the list.If you misspelled
your name when issuing this command, you can
correct it by reissuing the subscribe command.
How do I unsubscribe I'rom a list?
To unsubscribe from a list, use the unsubscribe or
signoff commands. These commands are also
synonymous; use either one. To remove yourself
from a list, use the command
unsubscribe listname your_name
where “listname” is the name of the list and .
"your_name” is your first and last names.
How do I join the list discussion?
To join a discussion, you must first subscribe to the
list. Once you’re a member of the list, send
electronic mail to the list address using the
electronic mail commands for your system. For
example, to join a discussion about bears, send
electronic mail containing your comments to the list
address bears-l@tamvm1. Your message will be
forwarded to every subscriber of the list.
What if I need help?
First, try the on-line help. The help command sends
you a brief description of the most useful com
mands and the names and electronic addresses of
the server’s postmasters. The info command sends
you an information file. For imformation about a
particular topic, type
info topic
For a list of topics, type
info ?
