Staff and Wire Reports
So close, yet...
One of the Texas A&M wom
en’s volleyball team’s biggest
problems arose Wednesday
night in Austin, as the Lady
Aggies dropped a heartbreak
ing five game match to the
Lady Longhorns, 15-13, 15-11,
3-15, 11-15, 10-15.
A&M started off sharply
in the first two games, in
cluding recording a sparkling
.300 hitting percentage in
the second game. But resi-
lency and a loud crowd of
1,993 at the Recreational
Sports Center
After the first two games,
the Lady Aggies’ offensive at
tack fell apart, as their hitting
percentage dropped to .029 in
the third game, as they were
blown out, 15-3. In the fourth
game, the two teams were
about equal in percentage, but
10 errors did the Lady Aggies
in. Despite staying close in
game five, A&M hit an abysmal
-0.118 and dropped to 12-11
overall(5-4 in the Southwest
Conference).
Starring for the Lady Aggies
during the contest were junior
setter Suzy Wente, who record
ed 59 assists and 13 digs, while
Page White added 16 kills, 16
digs and a team-leading .294
hitting percentage.
The Lady Aggies return to
action next Wednesday night
when they host the SWC cham
pion Lady Cougars of the Uni
versity of Houston at 7 p.m. at
G. Rollie White Coliseum.

type of player and if he catches
you slipping, it will be all over
for you.”
Brockermeyer is a multiple
time All-Southwest Con
ference performer on the
offensive line, and has yet
to allow a quarterback sack
this year.
Senior wide receiver Chris
Sanders, who was ejected on a
double personal foul very early
in last weekend’s game, said
he feels the Aggie offense
needs to get back on track af
ter two “off weeks” against
SMU and Rice.
“We came out real flat-foot
ed against SMU, “ Sanders
said. “This week in practice,
Coach Ensminger has gotten
back to the basics of football
and we’ve begun the format of
‘Do it hard, do it right and
then do it again.”
It is likely the Aggies will
attempt to run the ball down
the Longhorns’ throats with
regularity on Saturday,as the
UT defense ranks a horrible
65th in the nation, allowing
183 yards per game. Sanders
is confident however, that if
the Longhorns focus all their
efforts on stopping the run, the
receives can easily help move
the ball.
“When I see eight people
up on the line of scrimmage,
I just lick my chops ? “ Sanders
said. “People' are saying'
we’re the best receivers you’ve
never heard of. When it’s
our time, we know it’s time
to go and we’ll be ready
to contribute.”
For seniors like Sanders
and Armstrong, Saturday’s
game offers the opportunity to
go through four yeqrs of
A&M football with four wins
over Texas, a rare feat. Arm
strong said although he is
wary of the Longhorns, the se
niors have every intention of
winning the game.
“I respect them a lot be
cause they have a really good
team, “ Armstrong said.
“We know we can’t fool around
with them too long or else.
This will show who has the
most pride.
“We can’t be 11-0, but
we can be 10-0-1. I want to
go out of my senior year with
out a loss. This game’s
gonna show who’s really
the champions.”
Texas

enced players.
“There was a time last
week when we had three
freshmen in the game on de
fense, along with three true
sophomores,” Mackovic said.
“We’ve had to rush a lot of
youngsters to play.”
Offensively, Texas will
employ a rotating quarterback
shuffle, with sophomore
Shea Morenz getting the
majority of the snaps
over redshirt freshman James
Brown. Neither player
provided much of a spark
last weekend, as Brown led
Texas on its only two scoring
drives. Dating back to
his start in the Oklahoma
game, Brown has thrown a
touchdown pass in three
straight contests.
Junior wide receiver Lovell
Pinckney will provide the
Longhorns with a size advan
tage against the feisty Aggie
secondary. The 6 foot 5 inch,
230 pound Pinckney, who
runs a 4.4, will be matched
up against far shorter A&M
cornerbacks. Pinckney is sec
ond on the team to Eric
Jackson with 20 receptions for
251 yards and four touch
downs. Jackson, a senior
from Corpus Christi, provides
Texas with a deep threat. His
average of 18.3 yards per
catch leads the team.
“We spent a lot of time 1
TUb'ddAy'Wo'rkiflg on our basu
field offense,” Madkovic
said. “We expect a heck of a
game, and still have a lot of
work to do.”
Senior Roderick Walker
and junior Priest Holmes lead
the Longhorn rushing attack.
Between the two backs, they
have racked up 923 yards on
208 carries.
As is usually the case when
these two teams tee it up, pri
or statistics can be put aside,
Baskin said.
“There are no other intense
rivalries in Texas,” Baskin
said. “This game is for the
bragging rights of Texas.”
Mackovic said this rivalry
brings out something special
in the way each player goes
about his duty on the field.
“This game has a life of
its own,” Mackovic said. “You
don’t think a whole lot
about records and positions.
It’s just two teams that
play each other every year.”

While I’m dropping Lee
land, I see Channel 3’s John
Oakey with a cameraman in

interview, his eyes filled with
wonderment.
“Not now, John, “ I yell,
