The 1994 Texas A&M volleyball team has a fa
miliar face on the sideline this year.
After completing a outstanding four-year volleyball
playing career at Texas A&M last season, Genny
Wood stepped “outside the lines” to become a part of
the 1994 coaching staff as a student assistant coach.
Wood, a sports management major from San
Antonio, said her role as a student assistant in
volves a diverse range of responsibilities.
“My role is to be active in the practices, going up
to each player and trying to help them with their
technical skills,” Wood said. “If they (the players)
have questions, they will ask me for my opinion.
“In games, I keep track of passing in transition
(statistics), and where we get our kills.”
Wood, who developed into one of the best defen
sive players in the Southwest Conference last
year, said sometimes it has been difficult to switch
from being a player to a coach.
“It’s difficult at times for me because sometimes
I just want to put on the uniform and go out there
and play myself,” Wood said. “But I think I’ve ad
justed well to it because I’ve realized that I’m not
a player anymore and my role is to help out the
team as much as I can.”
Wood, a three-year starter for the Lady Aggies,
led the team in digs for three consecutive seasons
and was ranked in the top eight in the SWC for
dig average for three straight years.
As a senior, she was ranked second in the
SWC with a 3.37 dig average and helped lead the
team to a second-round appearance in the 1993
NCAA tournament.
When comparing the 1993 and 1994 volleyball
teams, Wood said this year's team is talented and
only lacks game experience.
“Last year, we had four seniors on the team,
(so) we were experienced in that way, but we
weren’t experienced with them(the new coaching
staff), ” Wood said. “(In terms of volleyball)
skills, this year’s team is great.
Genny Wood (#2), a starter on the ‘93 team, says
it has sometimes been difficult to switch to coaching.
“Their youth and (game) experience are the
only things that are really lacking, because their
talent level is so high.”
Head coach Laurie Corbelli said Wood brings
several of her “playing traits” to the coaching
side of volleyball.
“Her (volleyball) smarts that she had on the
court (in terms of) her anticipation, when you have
that as a coach, you can share that with your play
ers,” Corbelli said. “I think she also brings enthu
siasm and a youthful spirit to the team.
“She is very steady (emotionally), and I think
she brings that to the team because she there
everyday ready to coach the team.”
Wood, who is scheduled to graduate in May,
1995, plans to coach a club team during the upcom
ing spring semester. After graduation, she hopes to
find a coaching position on the college level.
Spurs suspend Rodman without pay
San Antonio coach removes star forward after latest outbursts
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The
San Antonio Spurs, saying
they will not tolerate Dennis
Rodman’s outbursts, suspend
ed the star forward without
pay Tuesday, one day after he
was ejected from his team’s fi
nal exhibition game.
“We’re just trying to get his
attention as best we can,”
coach Bob Hill said. “We've
pretty much planted our feet
on the kind of team we want
to have ... He needs to become
a part of that.”
Spurs general manager
Gregg Popovich said team offi
cials will decide soon on the
length of the suspension. He
will be suspended at least
through Friday’s season opener
against Golden State.
“Making it indefinite will not
fly,” Popovich said. “That’s just
something that we can’t do legal
ly. So we’ve got to decide how
long the suspension should be.”
Rodman, 33, who led the
league in rebounding last sea
son with an average of 17.3 a
game, earns a reported $2.4
million per year.
“He’s suspended without
pay,” Popovich said. “If you were
suspended without pay, just sub
tract your paycheck from your
self and you come to a total. I’m
not an accountant, but it seems
pretty simplistic to me. No pay.”
Rodman did not attend the
annual “Spurs Tip-off Lun
cheon” with the rest of the
players Tuesday, and his seg
ment was missing from a
video at the luncheon that in
troduced the players.
On Monday night, Rodman
was ejected from a game in
San Antonio against the Char
lotte Hornets, picking up his
second technical with 2:22 left
in the third quarter.
Hill removed Rodman after
the first technical. It appeared he
received the second one as he con
tinued to argue the call. Hill said
Rodman threw a bag of ice to
ward him and one of the officials.
“I thought it was directed at
me, the official thought it was
directed at him and they threw
him out,” Hill said.
“It’s not that it was going to
hurt anybody. It was a bag of
ice. But those are the kind of
things we've just got to try and
stay away from. Were just not
going to tolerate it.”
Rodman, who led the league in
technical fouls last year with 34,
missed a bus to nearby Kerrville
and a team meeting the opening
day of training camp Oct. 6.
He was fined $15,000 for not
showing up on time for an exhi
bition game against Milwaukee
on Oct. 20. Rodman had not
been expected to play in that
game because of back trouble.
Rodman said he considered
the fine excessive and told a na
tional television reporter, "If
they want to trade me they can.
That’s just business."
Hill was hired this summer to
replace John Lucas, who left to
coach at Philadelphia. Popovich
also joined the Spurs as general
manager over the summer.
“I think Dennis’s future is
in Dennis’s hands,” Popovich
said. “I’m sincerely hoping
that he’ll make some decisions
that will bring him back to the
fold. If it doesn’t happen, it
doesn’t happen.”

Solace for the Longhorns
with a Bluebonnet Bowl victo
ry, and a ranking among the
nation’s second tier?
Hard to believe, but six
years removed from a post
season victory, U.T. boosters
were nonetheless hopeful for
future promise.
Back to back losing seasons
almost cost McWilliams his
Longhorn life, however, a 10-
2 1990 season merely post
poned the inevitable. The Ag
gies’ recent dominance over
the Horns was temporarily
halted, and Texas, for the last
time, was back in Dallas on
New Years’ Day. The celebra
tion, however, was short
lived, as the mighty Miami
Hurricanes rolled to a 46-3
victory. The Longhorns’ per
formance in the Cotton Bowl
was a sign of things to come.
One year later, after a 5-6
campaign, and the return of
Aggie dominance on Thanks
giving Day, McWilliams was
out of a job, and Saint John
Mackovic appeared in Austin
as the hopeful savior of Texas
Longhorn Football.
Two and a half seasons and no
bowl appearances later, another
coaching change appears to be on
the horizon in Austin, as a return
to past glory for the orange and
white remains on hold.
