The Montgomery Gl Bill 2. Student loan repayment 3. Part-time income The Army Reserve Alternate Training Program is a smart way to pay for college. First, if you qualify, the Montgomery GI Bill can provide you with up to $6,840 for current college expenses or approved vo/tech training. Second, if you have - or obtain - a qualified student loan not in default, you may get it paid off at the rate of 15% per year or $500, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of $10,000. Selected military skills can double that maximum. Third, you can earn part-time money in college, and here's how it works: One summer you take Basic Training, and the next summer you receive skill training at an Army school. You'll earn over $1,500 for Basic and even more for skill training. Then you'll attend monthly meetings at an Army Reserve unit near your college, usually one weekend a month plus two weeks a year. You'll be paid over $105 a weekend to start. It's worth thinking about. Give us a call: (409) 764-0418 BE ALL YOU CAN BE.' ARMY RESERVE Vacuums used starting at $25. Belts & bags to fit all vacuums. Automobiles Netters Continued from Page 7 “I definitely think it is our best combi nation of starters,” Corbelli said. “They know each other well, and regardless if we win the game I will keep the same starters.” With strong play this weekend, the Lady Aggies are hoping to not only ex tend their winning streak, but also im prove their standings in the region. “I’m excited, but I know it has taken a toll on us to play so many ranked teams,” Corbelli said. “So much to where we don’t get a ranking because we’re not 21- 2. I think we’re better than some of the teams that are ranked in our region. With Georgia coming in, if we can get a win this weekend and a win off Ten nessee, the win against Colorado will get a nod and our competitiveness against Duke and Notre Dame will make people think A&M’s program is where it should be. But, you have to get the win no mat ter who you play.” Robyn Calloway/Tm Battalion Dana Santleben, junior outside hitter, returns the ball as Page White, sophomore middle blocker, looks on. 1983 Toyota Supra: black, loaded, excellent condition, $2,250 0.8.0. 268-1111. NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff Bag- well, whose season ended two days before the strike shut down the rest of baseball, was the unanimous winner Thurday of the National League Most Valu able Player Award. Bagwell swept all 28 first- place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America and finished with 392 points. Second place went to home run champ Matt Williams of the San Francisco Giants, who had 201 points. Moises Alou of the Montreal Expos was third with 183. Barry Bonds, winner of the last two NL MVP awards and three in the last four seasons, finished fourth with 144 points. Bagwell, the first Houston Astros player to win the MVP, and Williams were the only players named on all 28 ballots. Bagwell was leading the ma jor leagues with 116 runs batted in and in the midst of an 18- game hitting streak when he broke his left hand after being hit by a pitch by Andy Benes of San Diego on Aug. 10. The injury was expected to sideline the Astros first baseman for three to five weeks. Two days later the players went on strike, ultimately ending the season. In 110 games, Bagwell bat ted .368 with 39 home runs, second in the batting race to Tony Gwynn’s .394 and second in the home run chase to Williams’ 43. He had 32 dou bles and two triples and his 300 total bases tied Cesar Ce deno’s club record set in 1972, He also led the league with 104 runs scored. Bagwell's 39 home runs, 116 RBls, 72 extra base hits and .368 batting average were all Houston club records. He became the only the third unanimous winner of an NL MVP award, joining Orlando Cepeda in 1967 and Mike Schmidt in 1980. There have been seven unanimous MVPs in the American League — A1 Rosen, 1953; Mickey Mantle, 1956; Frank Robinson, 1966; Denny McLain, 1968; Reggie Jackson, 1973; Jose Canseco, 1988; and Frank Thomas, 1993. Swimmers Continued from Page 7 the ability to do well this weekend. “If we swim together as a team, and if we have 100 per cent effort, then we will have a great meet,” Pantano said. The Lady Aggies are led by 1994 All-American Susie Gey- er. Geyer views the relays as a way for the freshman and oth er swimmers to begin the sea son on a lighter note. “It is a neat way for fresh men to start out the year,” Geyer said. “It is a fun meet for everyone. It’s not like a real serious meet where we have to beat this team or that team. We have a couple relays that we will do well in and should win.” The SWC Relays will be used as a measuring stick for the teams to determine where they are in terms of training. “We use it (the relays) as a way to see where we are, in terms of training, and where everybody else is,” Nash said. The diving team is led by freshmen Jodi Janssen and Jarrod Flores. Janssen is a four-time Nebraska state champion and three-time all-American. Flores is a Texas high school state cham pion and was a finalist at the Junior Nationals. The diving team looks to ward this weekend as a chance to be involved in a competitive situation and determine what adaptions they need to make in their training. “This is an opportunity for diver to get in the mental situ ation of a competition,” head diving coach Kevin Wright said. “It is a dress rehearsal for the season so that we can find out where we are.” Wtm Much Ups Dave Nick Drew Stewart Tom Mark Rob Kim Heather Stew Commentary... Mathews Continued from Page 7 vest it in something that consis tently does it (well), be it the stock market or whatever, and he’s that type of player.” After sitting out the 1990 sea son, Mathews emerged as A&M’s third leading receiver as a red- shirt freshman in 1991, catching 13 passes for 276 yards. Prior to this year, Mathews’ most impressive season was 1992, when he caught 21 passes for 359 yards and two touch downs. Last year, Mathews was plagued with a broken hand, causing him to miss the last three games of the regular sea son. Despite seeing action in only eight games, Mathews made 13 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown. Mathews credits fellow senior receiver Brian Mitchell with helping him to overcome obsta cles and strive for greatness. “Brian is my best friend,” Mathews said. “We’ve been here since 1990. We’ve always helped each other out, telling each other that we should use this tech nique, or that technique.” As for the future, Mathews said his goal is to make it to the next level. “I would love to make it to the pros,” Mathews said. “But if not, I’ll try to get my education and go on from there.” As for now, Mathews said the only thing he can do is keep on doing what he does best: catch ing the football. “I really concentrate a lot when the ball is in the air,” Mathews said. “You don’t have that many chances to catch the ball, so you’ve got to make it happen when you get the op portunity.” Floppy Joe’s Sof'twa. He s t o ^ Check Out These Deals! 28.8 Fax Sound Diamond DoubleSpeed ^ Riacforifi Video Cards CD ROM Modem Blaster 16 from Drives $195.80 $109.20 $125.96 $134.95 FREE One year membership with this coupon Expires: 12-31-94 j 1705 Texas Ave. • Culpepper Plaza • 693-1706 Hockey fans sue for ticket, parking refunds DALLAS (AP) — Seven Dal las Stars fans have sued the hockey team for refunds of their season tickets and parking pass es because of the National Hock ey League players lockout. The NHL season has been de- layed since owners locked the players out in a labor dispute, and so far, two of the Stars’ 42 home dates have been canceled. The fans sued for their re funds Wednesday in state District Court, alleging breach of contract and violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. “Fans are generally ignored. But we’re the ones making it all possible,” said plaintiff Steve Swenson, who said he has about $2,500 tied up in two season tickets and parking passes. The Stars on Monday an nounced a ticket policy that al lows season-ticket holders to get credit toward tickets to future games or toward the purchase of team memorabilia. Refunds are offered only for specific games that have been cancelled. Team president Jim Lites said more than 85 percent of season ticket holders who have responded so far don't want refunds. Season ticket holders repre sent about 55 percent of the Stars’ fan base, and have pur chased about 3,500 seats for the 1994-95 season, Lites said.
