Anita Baker
“Rhythm of Love”
Elektra Entertainment
★ ★★★★ (out of five)

Anita Baker has produced yet
another soulful hit with her new
album “Rhythm of Love.”
The album has emotionally
stirring lyrics that move the lis
tener with every word. The
songs address the pains and pos
itive aspects of relationships in a
realistic, loving way. Whether
she’s singing of the good or bad
aspects of the love game, it’s all
in an adoring tone.
Her heartfelt notes convey a
scenario in each song that any
one can identity with. Some
deal with a fight with a loved
one while others express the
struggle of being in love with the
wrong person.
Baker writes the music and
lyrics to a number of songs on
this album including “Baby,”
“Wrong Man” and “I Apologize.”
These three songs are some of
the easiest to identify with.
They capture everyday emotions
and combine them with pleasing
melodies.
The whole album has a very
cozy feel to it. It has a comfort
ing mood which is a lot less sexy
but just as enjoyable as her pre
vious works.
The album takes on a slow-
jazz feel that makes you want to
curl up on the couch with a glass
of wine. The tones are silky and
soothing but
emotional
enough to
keep you
awake and
listening.
There are
some spicy
songs, how
ever, with
hard-hitting
lyrics and
superbly
soulful high
notes.

The dif
ference in
“Rhythm of
Love” from
her past
works is the
versatil ity
she exhibits.
Baker ex
ercises this
diversity by adjusting from
hard-hitting blues to silky
smooth jazz tones without a
hitch.
The manner in which she
uses her voice reminds the lis
tener why her singing is consid
ered such a pleasure. Its strong
and soothing sound says, with
out a doubt, this woman sings
straight from the soul.

This entire album is emotion
al and compassionate. In a
sense, very Anita. It is exactly
the kind of performance expect
ed from a woman with such in
credible talent and taste. In
fact, it’s a whole lot more.
Baker fans won’t be disap
pointed with this one and even
non-Baker fans may find them
selves changing their tune.
