Soccer
continued from page 5
tered a TO upset of the Univer
sity of Texas. The pressure
paid off when sophomore mid
fielder Kim Duda headed an
other Okler crossing pass to
give the Aggies a two-goal lead.
“If we can determine the
pace of the game and keep the
pressure on the other team, the
goals will come,” Guerrieri
said. “All
three of our
goals today
were quality
goals.”
The second
half’s only
score came
when Blalack
fired home
the rebound
from shots by
Okler and se
nior forward Anna Whitehead
to finish off the Huskies. Both
Okler and Whitehead were
named to the all-tournament
team.
The Aggies came off Friday's
2-1 win over Texas Christian
University. Okler’s goal from
thirty yards out and Blalacks
goal off a penalty kick were all
the Aggies would need.
The victories this weekend
gave coach Guerrieri his 100th
victory as a head coach. The 100-
43-6 record includes the 26-5-3
record in his two seasons at A&M.
The Aggies, who have won
13 straight home games, will
have a week off before travel
ing to Dallas for their October
30 match against the Universi
ty of Arkansas. They will re
turn to the Aggie Soccer Com-
plex for their November 2
home finale against Southern
Methodist University.
Guerrieri
Georgandis
Continued from page 5
Izzo was outshone however,
by his fellow line-backer Joe
Davis, who led all Owls with
12 tackles(nine unassisted),
and has an astonishing total of
61 for the season, an average
of nearly nine a game.
On the offensive side of the
ball, it’s taken some time, but
senior quarterback Josh
LaRocca is finally making the
wishbone, the flexbone, the
neckbone, the Bad to the Bone
and every other option offense
known to man, work to the
Owls’ advantage. Despite
some rough spots, the Owls
ran up 224 yards on the
ground, the most against the
Aggies’ in more than a year.
Obviously, Rice’s offense does
not have all the kinks worked
out of it, nor does the passing
game (a meager 4 of 11 for 19
yards against A&M) have the
potency to allow the Owls to
take to the air when they
need a score late in a game.
With the Baylor Bears
looking as though they are
prepared to begin their annu
al downward spiral through
the conference ranks, and
owning a head-to-head tie
breaker over Texas, the Owls
need only play smart to stay
in the front of the SWC pack.
Never will a team benefit
more from another’s misfor
tune than Rice will from
A&M’s probation this season.
A&M’s lack of television
coverage has made Rice’s up
set of UT in front of a nation
al audience the biggest game
to come out of the SWC this
year. With the death of the
SWC looming nearer, the big
bosses of the Western Athlet
ic Conference are all patting
themselves on the back for
asking the up-and-coming
Owls to attend that WACky
party come 1996.
From an Aggie standpoint,
you’ve gotta be proud of Rice,
even if they really scared the
hell out of us last weekend.
Year after year, the Owls
have been abused by punks
like UT and even worse, the
University of Houston. Now,
the Owls are paying back
some very old debts, and you
know, it couldn’t have hap
pened to a nicer team.
