AP Poll
Continued from Page 7
Slocum said. “(7th-ranked) Miami
is playing West Virginia this week
end. West Virginia is not worth a
flip.”
Washington head coach Jim
Lambright, whose team ended Mi-
ami’s 58-game home winning
streak with a convincing 38-20 vic
tory September 24, said it is unfair
that the Hurricanes’ vaulted past
them in the poll last week after de
feating Florida State two week
ends ago.
“We have absolutely zero con
trol (over voters),” Lambright said,
“The fact that Miami jumped
ahead of us shows the unpre
dictability of the poll.”
The Huskies have gone unde
feated after dropping their season
opener to Southern California Sep
tember 3. Lambright said all three
school are trying to make the best
of a bad situation.
“There is a common thread that
runs through each of the three
schools’ coaching staffs,” Lam
bright said. “10-1 is our goal. Af
ter that first loss, we are trying to
put 10 in a row together.”
Slocum said it is the writers'
poll, so it is their decision to deter-
mine the national champion,
However, Slocum said he believes
that no person can be considered
an expert.
“The writers haven’t seen all
the teams play, and the coaches
haven’t seen all the teams play,"
Slocum said. “There is no one who
can sit down and say authorita
tively This team is the best team
and this team is the second best,'
It’s all speculative.”
Blinebury said he is against the
whole system of writers’ voting for
the national champion.
“Sports writers voting for the
national champion is not an entire
ly good thing,” Blinebury said,
“There are prejudices, and person
al feelings make determinations,
I wouldn’t vote even if they
asked me to.”
Doreen
Countinued from page 7
instant credibility. Combine
these and we have higher
rankings.
(Random thoughbWouldn’t
a victory over a t.u. team
ranked in the top ten just have
felt so much better than a vic
tory over the team that lost to
Rice?)
Of course, Mackovic’s gang
of hoodlums did lose, and in re-
ality, all the rooting in the
world could not have saved the
Longhorns on that wet Sunday
night.
Another reality is that the
Aggies are undefeated, and
those looking for another upset
this week on Kyle Field can go
look somewhere else. The Ag
gies will win big this week and
for the rest of the season.
Do the Aggies deserve their
number six ranking based on
the schedule they have played?
No comment! Are they a team
that could contend for the na
tional title with quality victo
ries over more ranked oppo
nents? Definitely! It’s a shame
Rice had to play John Wayne
and defeat the bad guys that
could have given the Aggies
one of those victories. That is,
unless your second favorite
team is whoever is playing t.u.
