Anderson's edge dull after 10ye By Jay Robbins The Battalion John Anderson “Country ’til I Die” BNA Entertainment ★ ★★1/2 (out of five) John Anderson’s “just a swingin’” with his newest al bum, “Country ’til I Die.” Unfortunately, the fantastic re-release of his 1983 No. 1 hit “Swingin’” is the hardest-hitting track on the album. Anderson, romantically hailed as the “comeback story of the decade,” loses the shocking straight tequila edge that fired his return to the charts with the albums “Seminole Wind” and “Solid Ground.” The title track is simply bor ing. “Country ’til I Die” is a typ ical country song about country music, and dives straight into the sea of mediocre songs just like it. “Bend It Until It Breaks” fea tures a strong fiddle part remi niscent of the whispering strings on “Seminole Wind.” Still, the fiddle only adds life to an other wise brittle branch. But Anderson’s worst is still better than many country stars’ finest efforts, and two cuts both make the purchase worthwhile and guarantee any fan will al ways enjoy this album. “Keep Your Hands To Your self,” Anderson’s outstanding re make of the Georgia Satellites hit, proves that he belongs to country’s much-lauded “new tra- ditionnlist” style. This song plays out the difference between today’s country-fried rock and the rockin’ country cranked out by Anderson and greats like Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels and Willie Nelson. But, far and away the most spectacular tune is “Swingin.”’ Anderson included this new ren dition to make the song avail able to the fans he has gained in the last few years. “Swingin’" is one songs that demands a volume, a packeddat: and a mood that mi want to swing on forever.
