also became the surprised recipient of his
first career reception during the second
quarter on a deflected pass from Pullig.
Once Ward properly identified the strange
object in his hands as the pigskin, he rum
bled five yards before taking a tumble.
In the same drive, one of the strangest
penalties ever was called. Senior run
ning back Wilbert Biggens was the object
of a roughing the passer call on Baylor’s
defense. Yes, that’s running back,
Wilbert Biggens, as the Aggies ran a lit
tle razzle-dazzle halfback pass play.
Biggens throw was errant (by quite a
bit), but the penalty gave A&M a nice 15-
yard gain and a first down.
The Baylor defense was also responsi
ble for perhaps the worst blown coverage
of all time. When Corey Pullig looked up
past a blitzing comerback, he saw Chris
Sanders waving at him, with the nearest
Baylor Bear, the dumb dancing bear mas
cot, standing on the sideline. In the press
conference after the game, Sanders men
tioned he was scared to death to catch the
ball because he was so wide open.
Although the Aggie offensive line
played exceptionally well, there was one
play where they weren’t all on the same
page in the play book. On a third and six
from their own nine-yard line, Pullig,
Ward and the receivers all went on one

Monday • October 17,
snap count, while the rest of the offensive
line decided to wait a couple of seconds. It
looked very odd to see four offensive line
men frozen in a three-point stance while
the defense swarmed a rather surprised
Pullig at the one-yard line.
It’s been a bizarre season so far, full
of upsets and new stars. A&M was
ranked 16th in the AP preseason poll,
and has moved up 10 spots since, while
going 6-0. If weirdness=winning, let
the nuttiness continue.

The Texas A&M cross
country teams ran into tough
conditions and equally tough
opponents at the Texas A&M
Invitational Saturday at the
A&M golf course.
In the men’s division, senior
Matt Priest took fourth place
running the five miles in
26:00.26. The team’s second
place finish behind Rice Uni
versity has coach Greg Hinze
looking for improvements.
“It was a bittersweet feel
ing,” Hinze said. “We were
the best team in the meet.
They know if we have a good
day on the same day, we will
win the SWC meet or make
another team run out of
their minds to beat us.”
The women were led by
the sixth-place finish by
Shannon Etchberger and Ce-
cille Sangalang’s 12th-place
finish. The Lady Aggies
placed fourth behind first-
place Rice University. Etch-
berger’s performance earned
high praise from Hinze.
Offense
Continued from page 7
Thomas dominated the first
half, collecting 80 of his 108 to
tal yards and scoring a touch
down in the first 30 minutes.
McElroy enjoyed his second-best
game rushing as an Aggie, ram
bling for 105 yards on 22 car
ries. It was the first time A&M
has had two runners each gain
100 yards since McElroy picked
up 136 yards and Thomas added
107 in the Aggies’ 73-0 thrash
ing of Missouri last year.
Thomas, who averaged close
to eight yards per carry, and
started off the game with a 29-
yard run up the middle to start
the Aggies’ first possession, said
the balanced offense will not only
help the Aggies’ win games, but
also reach a new level as a team.
“If you look at A&.M in the
past few years, we’ve always
run the ball, “ Thomas said. “To
be able to mix it up, have a bal
anced attack, that’s a champi
onship caliber team.”
Another performer who con
tinued to improve for A&M was
senior wide receiver Chris
Sanders, who has become the Ag
gies’ big-play receiver in the last
three weeks. Sanders caught
three passes for 93 yards, includ
ing the stunning 75-yard catch-
and-run connection from Pullig
on the first play of A&M’s first
possession in the second half.
With no Baylor defender within
10 yards of him, Sanders raced
down the sideline for the score
that gave the Aggies a 17-7 lead,
“I was supposed to be run
ning a 18 to 20 yard out route,
but then I saw the safety come
up, “ Sanders said. “We al
ways say if a coverage is bro
ken, we just keep going deep,
and that’s what I did.”
Senior fullback Clif Groce, who
had the best receiving game of his
career, catching two passes for 55
yards, said the win over Baylor is
a major battle won in the Aggies’
quest for a perfect season.
“Every year, I point to games
that I know are going to be rough,
“ Groce said. “Baylor got a finger-
pointing, but we just said, ‘C’mon
if you think you can handle us.’”
