On behalf of the eight redpots of Aggie Bonfire and the rest of the Bonfire Com mittee, we would like to apologize to Texas A&M University, the Bryan-College Sta tion community, and anyone else who heard the offensive lyrics played at the Bonfire field on Oct. 5. Aggie Bonfire does not promote nor condone racism, and we regret any incident in which it might ap pear that we do. We believe and want all to feel that Bonfire is for all Aggies, and no one should feel that they cannot partici pate in Aggie Bonfire. We realize that Aggie Bonfire is one of the most visible organizations at Texas A&M. In order for Texas A&M to continue being the world-class university that it is, the actions of those working on Bonfire must not tarnish this image. Over the past several years, redpots have taken many steps to prevent incidents that may bring down the image of Texas A&M by students involved in Bonfire. The problems that once plagued All-Uni versity Night, Sbisa Yell, dorm wake-ups and grode yells across campus have been greatly reduced, and these events have once again become positive aspects of stu dent life. We, as redpots, address every Bonfire-related incident that reflects nega tively on Texas A&M with the utmost seri ousness. We accept full responsibility for the incident that occurred on Oct. 5, and we can assure the community at Texas A&M that racist lyrics such as those will never be played at Aggie Bonfire again. Aggie Bonfire’s purpose is to unite all Aggies. Any incidents that separate us will not be tolerated. BUILD THE HELL OUTTA AGGIE BONFIRE! conservative beliefs and attitudes for some reason have a hard time coming out. I make this statement with a hint of sar casm, because the paper obviously tends to lean toward the liberal spectrum. I feel that a university paper should reflect the views and opinions of the student body, not a small minority of it. I wonder how many students were really interested to hear about Becky Pinkard at a safe sex demonstration pulling a plastic penis from her jeans so her assistant could place a condom on her “new appendage” as The Battalion put it. I also find it curious that the editorial on Oct. 10 was to encour age Aggies to be tolerant and supportive of gays and lesbians. I am very proud to say that I was raised in an environment where this behavior was considered to be flat out unacceptable. I understand that some people are going to choose to live their lives like that, but is this really newsworthy material? I am sure that there will be plenty of counter-letters stating that I am just a typ ical homophobic conservative. I just hope that some of the Aggies who see where this paper’s priorities are, will express their concerns as well. As for some of the colum nist who wears lesbian T-shirts around campus to see what kind of a rise she can get out of us, maybe she would just be hap pier at t.u. where those kinds of things are just a part of everyday life. then. When I read The Battalion, these • I found Josef Elchanan’s column on Oct. 11 (U.S. should have finished Iraq job) to be both shortsighted and totally lacking of historic and geopolitical perspective. Elchanan seems to believe that Presi dent Bush is responsible for the present military buildup in Iraq. Apparently, Elchanan needs to be reminded that the reason that President Bush stopped the in vasion of Iraq was that it was not part of the U.N. resolution which authorized the U.S. and coalition forces to expel Hussein’s military forces out of Kuwait. Neither the United Nations nor the Arab world, which set aside decades of anti-American sentiment, authorized or sanctioned any plan to conquer Iraq and replace Saddam Hussein with another leader. The United States was not willing to become an occupation force on Arab soil. Further, there was no desire to decimate Iraq’s military to the point which Iraq would simply be handed over to Iran. Hindsight is always 20/20 and what ap pears to be obvious now was not so clear oppression. I have another memory Elchanan does not.
