AUSTIN (AP) — Texas back
up quarterback James Brown’s
debut this year in a 34-18 victo
ry against Texas Christian was
somewhat unceremonious.
It included nine plays, two
sacks, one fumble, no passes and
no touchdowns.
So Brown was somewhat per
plexed when Longhorns defensive
end Tony Brackens said after the
game that he had nicknamed the
redshirt freshman, “TD.”
Brown scratched his head and
confronted Brackens, only to
learn that TD stood for “Tack
ling Dummy.”
That was before Brown took
over for injured starter Shea
Morenz on Saturday and with
the poise of a veteran helped the
Longhorns knock off dreaded ri
val Oklahoma 17-10 in the Cot
ton Bowl in Dallas.
The Beaumont West Brook
product ran for a score and
passed for another. He complet
ed 17 of 22 passes for 148 yards
and ran nine times for 51 yards.
“Now, maybe he’ll call meTD
— for touchdown,” Brown said,
For his efforts, Brown has
been named the Southwest Con
ference Offensive Player of the
Week by The Associated Press.
Baylor defensive end Scottj
Lewis, who had eight tackles-
seven unassisted — including
three for losses of 14 yards in
the Bears’ 44-10 defeat of
Southern Methodist, has been
named the AP’s SWC Defensive
Player of the Week.
SMU coach Tom Ross ley said
the Mustangs had set out to run
against Baylor, but Lewis snuffed
those hopes almost immediately,
His first two tackles went for loss
es of 4 and 8 yards. The Bears
held SMU to two yards on the
ground in the first quarter.

participate in such exciting so
cial interaction. Saturday
night meant World Class
Wrestling on Channel 11.
There was no way I could sacri
fice that for a night of roller
skates and flirting with the
girls. Even if I could, two ob
stacles stood in my way. I had
no coordination and my very
presence repulsed all the
chicks. Back to my story...
Aside from reading about
wrestling and watching
wrestling, I took up wrestling.
No, not organized Greco-Roman
wrestling, but professional-style
wrestling, the kind that I
watched on TV. At recess, me
and my pals staged our own
wrestling events in the school-
yard. Usually the matches were
pretty tame but sometimes they
did get out of hand. In fact, I was
forced to end my storied recess
wrestling career when my oppo
nent got carried away and su-
plexed me into a pile of red ants.
Damn, now that I think about it,
she was a pretty strong gal.
About the time I gave up
wrestling at recess, I started
collecting the newest item on
the toy market: WWF
wrestling figures. In a little
more than six weeks, I owned
six wrestlers and a ring.
My sister constantly chided
me about playing with my
“dolls.” I couldn’t convince her
that they were figures, not dolls.
It was no use. The chiding per
sisted until I was forced to play
with my figures in private.
Not only was I fortunate
enough to own my own ring and
my own wrestling figures, 1 was
fortunate enough to meet a cou
ple of real life grapplers in per
son, Captain Redneck Dick Mur
doch and Cowboy Scott Casey.
I met Murdoch one cold
Sunday afternoon at my fami
ly’s ranch in Crandall, Texas.
He was dating a friend of the
foreman’s daughter. Man,
was he big. Not six months
later, I watched him adminis
ter a brainbuster to Ted DiBi-
ase on the cement floor of the
Sam Houston Coliseum. The
man had my respect.
As for Casey, I got to take my
picture with him on my 12th
birthday at a match held in
Galveston. To this day it ranks
as one of the 500 greatest mo
ments of my life.
If it hadn’t been for a rare B’
that I made on my first middle
school report card, wrestling
might still occupy my interests
to this day. However, because
of that ‘B’, my mother grounded
me from watching wrestling.
Furthermore, my subscriptions
to “Inside Wrestling” and The
Wrestler” were canceled, and
my wrestling figures were ex
iled to the family beach house
in Galveston. Some months lat
er, when I was finally allowed
to indulge in my wrestling in
terests again, I had discovered
girls. However, they still hadn’t
discovered me.

size,” Cobb said. “He was one
of the fastest people to come
out of this school.”
In high school, Huffman let
tered as a freshman and broke
several baseball records his se
nior year, while playing as a
pitcher and a center fielder. He
holds the school record for
stolen bases in a season with
34. Also during his senior year,
Huffman threw for 2,271 yards
and had 17 touchdowns, com
pleting 60 percent of his passes.
He earned all-district honors
as a quarterback and a punter.
He was named Southwest player
of the year and a super-prep all-
American for football.
He was heavily recruited by
many Division I colleges includ
ing LSU, A&M and Arkansas,
but finally decided to sign with
LSU on a full scholarship.
“I think Ryan chose LSU be
cause they had sound football and
baseball programs,” Cobb said.
Huffman said he preferred
football to baseball in high school,
but changed his mind in college.
Huffman, who two weeks ago
went to his first A&M football
game as an “Aggie,” said al
though his focus is now base
ball, it is difficult adjusting to
sitting in the stands and not
being on the football field.
Cobb said he could never tell
which sport Huffman liked more.
“He gave no indication of which
sport he liked more,” Cobb said.
“Ryan just liked to compete.”
Cobb said he is confident Huff
man will be drafted in the pros.
“I think he will definitely be
drafted after he graduates,” Cobb
said. “He has all the qualities
they(the pro scouts) look for.”
