UNLV negotiates buyout of basketball coach’s contract
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Rollie
Massimino’s future as UNLV
basketball coach was on the line
Monday, with university offi
cials trying to negotiate a buy
out of his contract.
Just five days before the
Runnin’ Rebels are to start
practice, Massimino met with
UNLV interim president Kenny
Guinn and athletic director Jim
Weaver to discuss whether he
would remain coach.
Sources told The Associated
Press that Guinn has decided
Massimino should leave, and ef
forts were being made to struc
ture a buyout before the start of
practice Saturday.
Massimino, who has three
years remaining on a five-year
contract, confirmed after
the meeting a buyout had
been proposed.
'We talked about it, but
it was a very preliminary dis
cussion,” he said. “We talked
in generalities about the
whole situation.”
Weaver called the meeting
“very amicable” and said anoth
er one will be held in the next
few days.
“We didn’t reach a specific
conclusion,” Guinn told KLAS-
TV. “There’s a few things
to resolve during the next 24
to 48 hours.”

fies another seven firms that re
ceived $322,828, but either were
not certified as minority-owned
businesses or whose certifica
tion had expired. One company
received payment of $103,195
but did not participate in the
project, the audit says.
Benavides said he disputes
some of the findings.
Dal-Mac, the largest of six
prime contractors on the project,
is not specifically cited for any
wrongdoing in the audit. But
Paul recommends that city offi
cials consider action against the
fronts and the prime contractors
who hired them.
Herb McJunkin, Dal-Mac’s
chairman and chief executive of
ficer, has repeatedly denied any
wrongdoing and cooperated fully
with the auditor.
“There has never, never, nev
er — in my whole life — been
any decision made at Dal-Mac
based on race,” he said in Mon
day’s editions of The Dallas
Morning News. “I don’t know
what they’re after, but they’re
barking up the wrong tree.”
