Volleyball team drops record to 3-5
Lady Aggies lose to Notre Dame and Michigan State
Staff and Wire Reports
The Texas A&M volleyball
was beaten twice over the week
end, as they traveled to Boulder,
Colorado, to compete in the Uni
versity of Colorado Tournament.
Saturday night, A&M took the
Michigan State Spartans to the
limit, before falling in five games
8-15, 15-12, 15-13, 10-15, 6-15.
MSU moved to 8-3 on the
year, while the Lady Aggies
dropped to 3-5.
Senior outside hitter
Jennifer Bronner led the
Lady Aggie attack with 21
kills and an .183 hitting
percentage. Also contributing to
the A&M cause were freshman
outside hitter Krisitie Smed-
srud, who recorded 19 kills, and
sophomore middle blocker Page
White, who added 15 kills.
After losing to the 12th-
ranked
Univer
sity of
miEfsiiiL
Texas
Lady Long
horns on Wednesday, the Lady
Aggies had to go right back to
work on Friday night.
A&M’s first game in the tour
nament was against 13th-
ranked Notre Dame, and the
Fighting Irish overwhelmed the
Lady Aggies in straight sets, 15-
4, 15-4, 15-3.
The Lady Aggies’ offense was
the major source of their woes,
as they could only manage a -
.010 hitting percent
age. Smedsrud led the
Lady Aggies with nine
kills, and junior setter
Suzy Wente recorded
22 assists.
The Lady Aggies
next game will be on
the road at Texas Tech on
Wednesday night. A&M re
turns home on Wednesday,
September 28 against Baylor at
7:00 p.m.
Bills buffalo Bucky and the Oilers
HOUSTON (AP) — Steve
Christie and Bruce Smith were
up to their old habits again on
Sunday — beating the Houston
Oilers.
Buffalo’s Jim Kelly and An
dre Reed played an a personal
game of catch to set up five field
goals by Christie, and Bruce
Smith squashed Houston’s of
fense with four sacks, leading
the Bills to a 15-7 victory.
The Bills (2-1) got their third
straight victory over the Oilers,
who started the season 0-3 for
the first time since 1984.
Smith battered Oilers quar
terback Bucky Richardson all
afternoon and delivered a jolt
ing blind-side sack late in the
third quarter that killed an Oil
ers’ drive at the Bills’ 27.

to 17 points after beating Ten
nessee 31-0 Saturday, the Vol
unteers’ worst home defeat in
70 years.
The Gators received 33 first-
place votes and 1,507 points
from a nationwide media panel.
Nebraska, which defeated visit
ing UCLA 49-21, got 20 first-
place votes and 1,490 points.
Nebraska still is No. 1 in the
USA Today-CNN coaches’ poll,
but its lead over Florida was
narrowed to six points.
Florida State, which downed
Wake Forest 56-14, remained
third in the AP poll with three
first-place votes and 1,376
points. Idle Michigan held fourth
with one first and 1,336 points.

ering a fumble, but could

Up in Waco, (hey, Highway
6 runs both ways) the Baylor
Bears, who have been favored
by some to win the conference
this year for the first time
since 1979, came from behind
to defeat Oklahoma State.
The game was extremely im
portant for the Bears’ stand
ings in the eyes of the nation.
Baylor blew out their first
two opponents in convincing
fashion, but those first two
opponents were San Jose
State and I Louisiana Tech, not
exactly two powerhouse
schools. Although OSU’s glo
ry days are behind them, they
are still a name team, and the
Bears did the conference
proud by knocking them off.
If Baylor’s for real, the nation
will know it next weekend
when the Bears tangle with
the 20th-ranked University of
Southern California Trojans
in Los Angeles.
The other game of the
weekend was also one of the
surprises of the weekend.
TCU knocked off favored
Kansas 31-21 at Fort Worth.
Although TCU will be hang
ing out in the Western Ath
letic Conference in two years,
not the Big 12, they did their
part to give the near-extinct
SWC a little more respect.
The other loss came cour
tesy of the Fightin’ Rice Owls,
who lost to Kansas State.
Rice is not very good, and
they’ve been getting worse in
the last few years. They went
from decent to average when
Trevor Cobb left. They have
now traversed down to down
right awful with the loss of
quarterback extrordinnaire
Bert Emanuel. Rice is bad,
real bad. That Rice vs. Hous
ton showdown for the Bayou
Bucket is going to be really
exciting. They’ll probably
have the Astrodome about
one-sixteenth full for the
rumble.
The SWC still has two
games left against the Big 8,
both involving the University
of Texas, October 1 against
Colorado in Boulder and the
week after in their annual
clash with OU in Dallas. UT
will probably get roughed up
by Colorado, who was ranked
seventh even before beating
lOth-ranked Wisconsin Sat
urday night. The UT-OU
game will be one of the best
games of the year in this re
gion, too bad the Longhorns
aren’t playing the Sooners in
stead of Baylor on Thanks
giving! but that’s another col
umn altogether).
