Deion Rainbow
STEWART
DOREEN
Sportswriter
I t’s official. The Deion Sanders tribute
to himself is now over. The All-Pro de
fensive back finally ended his coast-to
coast, whirlwind tour and signed a one-
year, $1.1 million contract with the San
Francisco 49ers Thursday.
Now, I know if you’re like me, you want
ed to see more press conferences and side
line appearances from “Prime Time”, along
with his entourage headed by Hammer.
Baseball’s cancellation on Wednesday
makes Deion, an outfielder for the Cincin
nati Reds, readily available to play his sec
ond sport. Sanders’ contract ties him to
baseball until the season officially ends,
one way or the other.
Why did “Prime Time” sign so suddenly
after the baseball season ended, after he
was so cool and collected jetting across the
country, talking to different teams?
Maybe, it is because it is important for
those Nikes that he wears on his feet to
start high-steppin’. It shouldn’t go unsaid
that Deion’s shoe endorsement contract
with Nike skyrockets when he participates
in two sports instead of one. So, the sooner
he signs, the sooner he collects.
So what does the signing mean to an in
credibly talented 49er team? The signing
of “Prime Time" and former Pro Bowl de
fensive end Charles Mann strengthens a
pass defense that ranked 26th in the
league last year, and was just about aver
age ranking 15th in the first two games
this year.
Oh, how things should change. Add
Sanders and Mann to other acquisitions
such as Ken Norton, Gary Plummer, Toi
Cook, Rickey Jackson, and the injured
Richard Dent, there’s absolutely no reason
why San Francisco shouldn’t go to the NFC
championship and defeat God’s team, the
Dallas Cowboys. That’s what 49ers presi
dent Carmen Policy is banking on.
Actually, mortgaging is more like it.
The 49ers are mortgaging the future on
this year’s team. If the team wins the
NFC championship and goes on to win the
Super Bowl, incentives will have to be paid
to the players who originally signed for the
league’s minimum or a little more. These
incentives will work directly against next
year’s salary cap.
Sanders’ contract is an example of this.
,,Sanders will.collect. $35.0,000 as the base
part of his contract, and $750,000 will be
given in post-season incentives. That
$750,000 goes directly into next year’s pay
roll while Deion takes his show on the road
looking for yet another deal. Word has it
that Kriss Kross will make a special ap
pearance with the entourage next year.
Deion Sanders said, in his last press
conference of the 1994 tour, “Winning was
a factor, and I know we’re going to to win
in San Francisco.”
The 49ers are banking on it.
Right at home on Kyle s field
Bryant takes
charge as A&M's
new specialist
By David Winder
The Battalion
During his career at A&M Consoli
dated High School, placekicker Kyle
Bryant was named first-team Class 4A
All-State, All-District and All-Brazos
Valley. He finished with 29 career field
goals after kicking a state record 19
during the 1992 season.
Shockingly, the University of
Southwestern Louisiana was the only
one to offer Bryant a scholarship.
Bryant wanted to play for a larger
school though, so he decided to walk
on at Texas A&M.
“I decided to walk on at A&M be
cause I just didn’t have the scholarship
offers that I wanted,” said Bryant, who
was given a scholarship last year. “I
wanted to play for a big time football
team. I just felt that if I couldn’t get a
scholarship to a college that I wanted
to go to then, I would walk on to a foot
ball team that I knew was going to do
well in the future.”
Bryant, a redshirt freshman, has
done well in the present making all
five field goals he’s attempted this
year. In his first game, he kicked a
50-yard field goal against Louisiana
State and followed that up with a 53-
yarder against the University of Ok
lahoma in his second game.
“I felt I was capable of doing this
all along,” Bryant said. “It was just a
matter of time for people to see it.”
Bryant said he feels no pressure
replacing Terry Venetoulias, who fin
ished his career as A&M’s third al-
time leading scorer.
“Terry was a great kicker while
he was here, but I’ve always felt con
fident that I could rise to the occa
sion,” Bryant said. “There’s no pres
sure here. I’ve kicked on this field
(Kyle Field) for a year now. There
just happens to be people in the
stands now.”
Bryant, however, is compared more
to former A&M placekicker Tony
Franklin than to Venetoulias.
“I’ve never had the chance to meet
Tony Franklin but hopefully one day I
will,” Bryant said. “From what I hear,
he was the same confident person, re
ally sure of himself like I am.
“They really don’t compare our
styles, just the success of our kicking
and our personalities.”
Head coach R.C. Slocum has been
impressed by what he has seen so far
from Bryant.
“He’s a young man whose got a lot of
talent,” Slocum said. “He could have
done less that what he has done, and I
would still be pleased with him.”
LSU and Oklahoma were also im
pressed with Bryant, they just wish
they had offered him scholarships.

Soccer team ready to weather Tulsa storm
Stewart Doreen
The Battalion
It’s a reunion of sorts when the Gerald Guerri-
eri, head coach of the Texas A&M women’s soccer
team, leads the Aggies into battle against his alma
mater, the University Friday at 5 p.m. at the Aggie
Soccer Complex.
Guerrieri played for soccer the Golden Hurri
cane from 1981-1984 receiving honors as the team’s
MVP in and the all-midwest region goalkeeper.
The ties to Tulsa continued from 1984-86 when he
worked as the assistant coach for the men’s soccer
team as well as goalkeeping for the Tulsa Tornado,
a now defunct professional team. On this day, Tul
sa is the foe and Guerrieri realizes the strength of
the preseason Top 20 opponent.
“Bein my alma mater, I have a lot of respect for
them,” Guerrieri said. “Tulsa started the season
with a preseason Top 20 ranking. Tulsa came
within 60 seconds of qualifying for the NCAA
Championships prior to being stunned by SMU in
the last game of the season, so we know that they
are coming into this season with a lot to work for.
We are going to be at our best to be able to compete
with them.”
The Golden Hurricane, 2-2-0, are coached by
Randy Waldrum, who is in his seventh season
boasting a record of 57-29-7. Waldrum brings back
seven returning starters and 12 returning letter-
men from the 1993 team that finished the season
with a 14-4-2 record and a No. 18 national ranking.
Senior forward Glenda Moore, sophomore forward
Jenny Simms and sophomore forward/midfielder
lead the Tulsa attack.
The Aggies, 3-1-1, will play their second game at
the Aggie Soccer Complex after winning their home
debut Tuesday 4-1 over Mercer University. Sopho
more forward Yvette Okler’s one goal/three assists
performance powered the Aggie offense while
sophomore goalkeeper Sunny McConnell held the
Lady Bears to one goal on nine shots. Okler thinks
Friday’s game is one the Aggies need to win.
“We need to win this big,” Okler said. “They are
not ranked now but are going to be a tough oppo
nent. We ought to beat them bad.”
Other offensive threats for the Aggies include
the team’s leading scorer, junior midfielder Corie
Hammers, sophomore forwards Kristen Koop and
Tina Robinson and freshman midfielder
Sonia Ibanez.
The defense is holding opponents to 1.31 goals per
game with the goalkeeping duo of McConnell and se
nior Michelle Crofts in taking turns in the net.
