Nails puts the movie into the
music.
Lines from numerous actors
fade in and out of 27 songs,
giving the soundtrack an edge
similar to that of the movie.
Juliette Lewis’ live version of
“Born Bad” appears on the al
bum complete with effects
from Batongaville Prison.
The best track on the al
bum is L7’s “Sh-tlist” which
stands well by itself after be
ing one of the musical high
lights in the movie. The Cow
boy Junkies’ remake of the
Lou Reed tune “Sweet Jane”
also excels.
Reznor includes some of his
own songs for the album,
choosing “Burn,” "Something I
Can Never Have” and “A
Warm Place.” Reznor’s songs
fit the tempo of the album, but
the soundtrack would sound
better had songs from the
movie been included, namely
Rage Against the Machine’s
“Take the Power Back” and
the Melvin’s “Spread Eagle
Beagle.”
Leonard Cohen hits it big
with “Waiting for a Miracle”
and “The Future,” the songs
that open and close the film.
Excerpts from Jane’s Addic
tion’s “Ted Just Admit It” and
Diamanda Galas’ “I Put a Spell
On You” appear in the excep
tional “Sex is Violent.”
Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy
Dogg appear twice on the al
bum with “The Day the Niggaz
Took Over” and “What Would U
Do.” Though these songs are
not bad, these artists!
