Slocum needed to recruit heavily for lineman who could compete for a starting position and add depth to the team. Enter Jason Flegeance. Flegeance, one of the top re cruits from Texas A&M;s na tionally-ranked recruiting class of 1994, is a 6 foot-5 inch 310 pound lineman from St. Mart- inville, Louisiana. Rated as one of the top offen sive line prospects in Louisiana, Flegeance was a two-time Louisiana Class 4A first-team all-state selection. He was also named to the all-district and all-academic teams, and led St. Martinville High to a 10-3 record and the quarterfinals of the 1993 state playoffs. Coming out of high school, Flegeance was recruiting by several “big-time” colleges rang ing from Florida and Miami to Alabama and Texas. Being a top prospect in Louisiana, their was also pressure from friends and family to attend Louisiana State University. “I felt a lot of pressure to stay in Louisiana,” Flegeance said. Tve been to a lot of LSU games, and all the state’s top (football) prospects are expected to play at LSU. But I was one who didn’t.” Fleageance was still undecid ed on where he was going to at tend college until his visit to Texas A&M. The fact that the A&M football team was going on probation for five years had no bearing on his decision to be come an Aggie. “When I made my visit here, I liked the people and coaches, and the atmosphere was second to none,” Flegeance said. “I knew this was where I wanted to spend the next four or five years be cause Texas A&M is a top college program. It gets a lot of TV ex posure and produces plenty of NFL players.” Flegeance said with the school’s upcoming move to the newly formed Big 12 conference, he can’t wait to play against Col orado, Nebraska and Oklahoma every year, and hopefully, to com pete for a national championship. Joe D’Alessandris, offensive line coach for Texas A&M, said the coaching staff plans on red- shirting Flegeance for his fresh man year, so he can grow men tality and physically within the program. “He has a big, massive body that in time, with maturity and work he can be a good player,” D’Alessandris said. “It’s going to take work on his part, but he has the skill to do it.” Partly cloui |howers or thi igh near 9 rinds near 10 Nick Rodnicki/THiBr Freshman Jason Flegear: awaits his next drill at | |q 1 Lady Ags Continued from Page 9 earned first-team all-state honors in 1992 and 1993 from both the Texas Girls Coaches’ Association and the Texas Sports Writers’ Association. She was also named a three-time, all-district first team selection in District 16- 5A, and was that league’s most valuable player in 1993. Mensik was also excited to see the crowd going wild from the play of the Lady Aggies. “You always hear about the Twelfth Man for football, but it was like the Twelfth Man for volleyball,” Mensik said. “It was awesome, and I had chills towards the end of the match.” Smedsrud said the Lady Ag gies started strong in all of the games, but struggled with sev eral mental lapses between points five and 12. “I thought we showed some great things when our passing was on, because Suzy (Wente) is a great setter,” Smedsrud said. “We had confidence with everyone else, which made us pass better because we knew someone would be right be hind us.” The Lady Aggies travel this weekend to Boulder, Colorado, to play in the University of Colorado Tournament.
