ANNOUNCING TWO N E W C R E F ACC O U N I S
YOU’RE LOOKING AT TWO
COMPLETELY OPPOSITE, FUNDAMENTALLY
DIFFERENT WAYS TO INVEST IN STOCKS.
WE RECOMMEND BOTH.
Introducing the CREF Growth Account and the CREF Equity Index Account.
W hether you want a fund that
selects specific stocks or one that
covers the market, we re on the same page.
Our new CREF Growth and CREF
Equity Index Accounts use two distinct
strategies for investing in the stock mar
ket, but both aim to provide what every
smart investor looks for: long-term
growth that outpaces inflation.*
The CREF Growth Account searches
for individual companies that are
poised for superior growth. In contrast,
the Equity Index Account looks for more
diversification, with a portfolio encom
passing almost the entire range of U. S.
stock investments. It will invest in stocks
in the Russell 3000®,** a broad index of
US. stocks.
Like our CREF Stock Account, which
combines active, indexed, and foreign
investing, and our Global Equities
Account, which actively seeks opportuni
ties worldwide, the new funds are managed
by experienced investment professionals.
They’re the same experts who have helped
make TIAA-CREF the largest pension
system in the U.S., managing over $130
billion in assets.
To find out more about our new stock
funds, and building your portfolio with
TIAA-CREF, just call 1 800-842-2776.
And take your pick.

Texas A&M is a school of 40,000 students*
countless different religions. I am Jewish,i
would not like being expected to pray in Chrii

Mark Twain said: “Everybody could be
kind of a Christian he wanted to; there was
feet freedom in the matter. But I confined pi
religious teaching to the churches and the Si

In recent years, the debate about prayer in
school has become more prevalent. No matter
which side you are on, there are certain facts that
must be considered. When America was estab
lished, our founding fathers recognized the impli
cation of religion in a free society. Many of the
people came to America to escape religious perse
cution. They wanted to be able to practice their
own beliefs without the imposition of others.
The concept of freedom of religion works in two
different ways. To be able to follow your own be
liefs, and also to not have others’ beliefs forced
upon you. In Heidi W. Voges’ Sept. 8 letter to the
Battalion, she stated that our earliest schools be
gan in churches. This may be true, but most of the
earliest settlers were Christian. If a group of peo-
