U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Andre
Agassi, navigating the most per
ilous path to the U.S. Open cham
pionship in history, battered
Michael Stich from the start Sun
day and slammed him with a shot
at his wrist at the end of a thor
oughly ruthless performance.
Agassi never lost his serve in
his 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory,
putting on such a commanding
show that he beat the former
Wimbledon champion in every
phase of the game.
Agassi dominated Stich at the
start and at the most crucial
times later in the match. He
broke the German at love in the
first game, held with the help of
three aces, broke him again in
the third game, then held at love
for a 4-0 lead. The set was effec
tively over, and it ended official
ly after just 24 minutes with a
bit of luck for Agassi and a dou
ble-fault for Stich.
The luck came for Agassi with
Stich serving at deuce. They had
a rapid exchange, which Agassi
capped with a reflex volley on a
volley by Stich at his chest.
Agassi raised his hands and
pranced around the court.
That shot and show by Agassi
rattled Stich enough that he dou
ble-faulted to lose the set.

Stich got his serve working
in the second set, holding all
the way to the tiebreaker. But
Agassi gained the advantage he
needed in the tiebreaker with a
bullet backhand return that
ticked the net cord and threw
off Stich as he came in. Stich
dumped the half-volley into the
net to fall behind 4-2, and
Agassi served out the set.
In the final set, when Agassi
broke Stich for the last time for
a 6-5 lead, one of the shots
came at close range and hit
Stich in the wrist.
“I just wanted to make him a
little hesitant to get that close to
the net,” Agassi said.“I can’t be
lieve it’s all over. I can’t believe I
did this.”
Georgandis
continued from page 5
homa offense around the field,
limiting the Sooners to only 3.2
yards per play, compared to
the Aggies’ 4.7 average. Even
more impressive, the Sooners
didn’t not breach A&M’s side of
the field until 3:03 remained
in the first half.
“We really proved a point
tonight, “ senior linebacker An
tonio Armstrong said. “We
showed we have a national pow
erhouse defense. I couldn’t be
more proud.”
Neither could the faithful at
Kyle Field, whose relentless
screaming and noise-making
definitely contributed to the un
settling of junior quarterback
Garrick McGee, who was a mea
ger 11 of 34 passing, being
sacked three times while throw
ing three interceptions, includ
ing two in the fourth quarter.
McGee was flustered from
the opening possession when se
nior defensive end Larry Jack-
son slapped a McGee pass right
back at him, forcing a punt by
the Sooners. A&M took the
ball, rang up three points and
never lost the lead.
What comes next is what I
think is on everyone’s minds,
the Aggies sure are looking like
a team that can go 11-0 this
year. A&M will surely hop up a
couple of places in the polls
since #15 Oklahoma and #14
Penn State were both beaten
soundly, while #13 UCLA near
ly lost to SMU. Of course, most
poll voters don’t particularly
like teams on probation, so a
national championship is pretty
much out of the question. But,
what a way to spite the NCAA.
