is going on and then present it
to the administration.”
Leslie said Boenig will do
great things as Senate speaker.
“He has a lot of drive, experi
ence, and a love of A&M and his
job,” she said.
Leslie said the student body
president and the Senate speak
er can have either no effect on
each other or they can take the
relationship to the fullest extent,
which she does not think has
ever been done.
“In the past there has been a
lot of fighting between the two
branches, much like there is in
the U.S. government,” she said.
However, Leslie said she and
Boenig plan to work together.
“Toby and I plan to work
hand-in-hand to get things done
this year,” she said. “We have
one common goal and that is to
help the students of A&M.”
Boenig said he really looks
forward to working with Leslie.
“She really wants to work
hard,” he said. “One of my
goals is to make sure that the
Student Senate speaker and
the student body president
work closely together.”
One of Boenig’s main con
cerns as speaker is the adoption
of student election regulations
that work for the students.
“We need regulations that
are workable with no loop
holes,” he said.
Boenig also plans to work to
get extra reading days before fi
nal examinations.
“The extra days have been
pursued for so long and I really
want to get something imple
mented,” he said.
Student Government has pro
grams to help its members stay
in touch with students and what
they want.
“We have a Senate con
stituency and we speak to two
student organizations a semes
ter that are within our con
stituency,” he said. “If you are a
senator for the College of Engi
neering then you speak to two
engineering organizations.”
Next semester, Boenig said he
wants to speak more than twice
a semester.
“I want to give a speech each
night to student organizations,”
he said. “I want students to
know they can call me if they
want me to speak or if they have
a problem I can help with.”
Boenig said the administra
tion at A&M really pays atten
tion to what the students want.
“The administrators are real
ly helpful,” he said. “Dr.
Southerland is a great person
and I know that I can go to him
anytime with a problem.
“Dr. Bowen is a great person
for the job he holds,” Boenig said.
Boenig has been involved
with A&M’s Student Govern
ment since his second semester
here and has previously held the
positions of academic affairs
chair and speaker pro tempore.
“When I first got involved
with Student Government, I
wasn’t really sure why I did it,”
he said. “Then I started seeing
that I fit in and that I could
make a difference.”
