that Ensminger first faced off
against his alma matter, as his
Bulldogs cruising to a 31-10 tri
umph over the Tigers at Athens.
It was also at Georgia that
Ensminger’s offensive system be
came nationally known. In 1992,
the Bulldogs averaged 32 points
a game, with tailback Garrison
Hearst placing third in the Heis-
man Trophy balloting while win
ning the Doak Walker award, an
honor Aggie senior tailback Rod
ney Thomas is nominated for this
season.
Another star of Ensminger’s sys
tem is Georgia’s senior quarterback
Eric Zeier, who already holds 61
school and 11 Southeast Confer
ence passing records.
Ensminger’s offensive strategy
revolves around making opposing
defenses respect the run and the
pass on every single down. De
spite the increased aerial attack
this system suggests, Thomas said
the system is not all that different
from the one that Aggie fans are
used to seeing.
“I think the offense is fairly the
same ,in that it will allow the run
ning backs make big plays,
‘‘Thomas said. "I think it’s going to
be a good offense and showcase a
lot of guys.”
In Saturday’s game, Ensminger
will match-up against an old coach
in Lynn Amedee, LSU’s offensive
coordinator.
‘‘Lynn and I have been good
friends ever since I’ve been
through playing, “ Ensminger
said. “He doesn’t like to lose, he
didn’t when I played for him at
LSU and he still doesn’t.”
Amedee held the position of of
fensive coordinator for the Aggies
from 1985-87, and under him,
A&M became the first SWC team
to average over 200 rushing and
passing yards in the same season.
Ensminger said Amedee helpqd
him make up his mind and come
to A&M.
“We spoke about(jobs) and leav
ing Georgia, and I asked, ‘What
about A&M?’, “ Ensminger said.
“He said, ‘I’d jump at it, it was a
great tradition, a great program
and it’s the type of atmosphere
you’d like to be in.”
Hockey camps to open today

including a win over Alabama.
T think our winning streak at
the end of the year taught a lot of
guys what it takes to win,” Tiger
flanker Eddie Kennison said. “We
expect A&M to be just as tough
as they have been in the past.”
LSU returns six starters on of
fense and six players on defense
from last season. Safety Ivory
Hilliard is an All-American can
didate while Kennison ranked
among the nation’s leaders in
punt returns and kickoff returns.
Offensive coordinator Steve
Ensminger said the Tigers will
be better than they were last
season.
“They have a chance to be a
really good football team,” Ens
minger said. “There going to be
better defensively, and anytime
you can beat a team like Alaba
ma, you can beat anybody.”
NEW YORK (AP) — Starting
today, the Winnipeg Jets will
open training camp. And by next
week, all 26 NHL teams practice .
That’s good news to the play
ers, who were expecting a possi
ble lockout on Monday. And good
news to NHL Players Association
director Bob Goodenow, who ex
pects to negotiate the NHL in an
effort to work out a new collective
bargaining agreement.
“What this means is that the
camps will go forward as
planned and the negotiation
process between the parties will
also continue,” Goodenow said
Wednesday in a prepared re
lease after ho learned that the
NHL had told teams that train
ing camps would open on time.
Teams received a fax from th
league Wednesday that said i:
part: “You can confirm to thi
press that all camps will be open
Arthur Pincus, NHL vkt
president of public relations
said the faxes were sent “just t:
clarify all the speculation abou;
the training camps.”
That had been a big topic o!
interest ever since Dallas Mom
ing News reported on Tuesda;
that said NHL commissions
Gary Bettman would order
lockout of camp if no contrac:
agreement was reached by then.
“We never closed then
down,” Pincus said Wednesday
of the training camps. "As Fw
said all along, we’re operating
business as usual.”
