When Houston rocker Hadden Sayers
was an agriculture journalism student at
Texas A&M in the late-80’s, the Bryan-Col-
lege Station rock music scene consisted of a
few small clubs that would venture out
into the untested waters of rock-n-roll only
to have its doors closed almost as soon as
they opened.
But now with the 3rd Floor Cantina and
Stafford Opera House firmly entrenched as
pillars of a flourishing alternative music
scene, a much-welcomed tide has begun to
turn, Sayers said.
“Of course Northgate will always be a
traditional student hangout,” the 26-year-
old singer/guitarist said. “But with the
whole community growing, the downtown
area is really growing into its own enter
tainment district that’s really making a
name for itself.”
Sayers will be revisiting his A&M roots
tonight as he and his self-titled band rat
tle the 3rd Floor Cantina with a style of
blues-rock mixing the sounds of the
Austin, Houston, and even College Station
music scenes.
Sayers traces his musical roots to some
foundling Bryan/College Station bands he
played in while a student at Texas A&M.
Sayers worked part-time in the Journalism
Department as a roustabout of sorts, doing
whatever former department head Dr. Bob
Rogers asked of him.
“I had the same job Lyle Lovett had
when he was here,” Sayers said. “Dr.
Rogers used to tease me and say, ‘You’re
not going to go and quit on me and become
famous like Lyle did.”
While at A&M, Sayers formed bands the
Kerouacs and the Killtones and got gigs at
the now-defunct AnAm Teahouse, which
was owned by Stafford Opera House
founder T.C. Nguyen. The small communi
ty of musicians that played at AnAm and a
few other clubs that featured alternative
music had a big impact on Sayer’s music,
he said.
“Musically, (Bryan-College Station) gave
me a place to develop,” Sayers said. “There
was a small intimate group of musicians
that I really felt a kinship to.”
As a career in music became a reality,
Sayers packed his bags, moved from Ag-
gieland and headed to Austin, home of
Texas blues and guitarist great Stevie Ray
Vaughn, whom Sayers, like most Texas mu
sicians, pays homage. He signed on as gui
tarist for Silent Partners, a blues band that
played alongside blues legend B.B. King.
In 1991, Sayers began to feel the pull
back to Houston where he had grown up
and signed on as a guitarist in blues singer
Miss Molly’s band. With Miss Molly, Say-

ers was given the creative freedom he
craved during his growth as a musician.
He wrote many of her songs, including
“Surrounded by Love” which went on to be
come a regional hit for the band and also
penned many of Miss Molly's songs on her
forthcoming CD, “In the Garden.”
But like most artists with a personal
creative vision, Sayers amicably split from
Miss Molly after three years to pursue his
own interests. He put together The Had
den Sayers Band which consists of John
Hamilton on drums, Barbara Donaho on
acoustic guitar and backing vocals and ex -
Miss Molly bassist Charles Knight.
“It’s definitely Texas music,” Sayers
said. “A lot of artists like Ian Moore and
Sunset Heights owe a debt to Stevie Ray
Vaughn. I feel a kinship to Steve Miller
who’s from Dallas and also Houston’s Billy
Gibbons of ZZ Top who’s an incredible tech
nician and can get his guitar to sound just
the way he wants it to.”
And apparently, Sayer’s style of music is
catching on. The Hadden Sayers Baniil
recently named the best new act in
ton by the Houston Press. Also, seif
recording labels are looking at the!
and their forthcoming 11-song CDwIii
to be released in January.
But in the meantime, Sayers and
band have embarked on a rigoroustoi
schedule. The band will play in
tonight, in San Antonio Friday
Houston Saturday.
