Sampras playing well despite long absence
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Sampras’ first
match in six weeks, a no-sweat quickie
against a no-serve qualifier at the U.S.
Open, proved he can beat some players vir
tually in his sleep, on crutches, maybe in a
wheelchair.
Winning the title again is another matter.
Sampras, No. 1 by far in the rankings af
ter capturing four of the last five Grand
Slams, dismissed No. 206 Kevin Ullyett 6-2,
6-2, 6-2 Wednesday in 1 hour, 25 minutes —
one of the shortest men’s matches so far.
Whether it was the rain clouds threatening
or his ankle worrying him, Sampras wasted
no time getting this little test out of the way.
The best part of it for Sampras was that he
didn’t feel pain in his left ankle, inflamed with
tendinitis since he injured it during a Davis
Oilers
continued from Page 9
“The No. 1 thing now is we’ve got to talk
about, discipline,” Fisher said. “We can’t
beat ourselves with dumb penalties. We’ve
got to use our heads. This club has a tradi
tion of being penalized a lot. We’ve got to
clean that up.”
The cleanup likely will include a rotation
system at right defensive end.
Williams was supposed to become a starter,
but slow progress from offseason knee surgery
forced the Oilers to waive him last week.
Former Steeler Kenny Davidson will
start at left end and and converted line
backer Lamar Lathon, veteran Keith Mc-
Cup match right after he won Wimbledon.
He served as hard as ever — up to 125
mph — though as a right-hander his left foot
is the one he plants and comes down on when
he serves. He yielded only one point on serve
in the first set. His groundstrokes were crisp
and accurate, especially in that opening set
when he made only two unforced errors.
But Sampras also exhibited some slowness
and rust, which was to be expected. He didn’t
attack the net the way he usually does, and he
refrained from chasing every ball. He didn’t
have to go all-out, so he didn’t bother.
Sampras, who was given the first two
days off, decided not to take a cortisone shot
for his ankle because of worries about the
long-term damage it could cause. Instead, he
took anti-inflammatory pills, and after the
match used ice and electrical stimulation to
Cants and No. 1 draft pick Henry Ford will
work on the right side.
The secondary is the Oilers’ strength,
headed by All-Pro safety Marcus Robertson
and cornerback Cris Dishman.
Carlson will preside over an altered of
fense that now includes two backs on occa
sion and some tight end alignments. The
run-and-shoot is still the primary offense,
but it’s not the same for Haywood Jeffires,
part of the “Fab Four” starting wideouts.
“That was a special time here,” Jeffires
said. “The nickname went for all of us. It
was not an individualized thing.”
Only Jeffires and Ernest Givins remain.
Drew Hill moved to Atlanta and retired
and Curtis Duncan was waived before the
season started.
keep the swelling down.
“I’m doing everything I can not to feel
it,” he said, walking away from the Nation
al Tennis Center more than two hours af
ter the match.
His next opponent Thursday, No. 54
Daniel Vacek, should give him more of a
test, and down the road in their quarter of
the draw looms Andrei Medvedev.
“I hope it won’t be a problem,” Sampras
said of playing two consecutive days.
“There’s a chance (the ankle) might be sore.”
Medvedev, No. 8, advanced easily
Wednesday, beating Gilbert Schaller 6-3,
6-4, 6-0. No. 10 Alberto Berasategui was
upset by Marcos Ondruska 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-
3 and No. 14 Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat Jac-
co Eltingh 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, 6-3.
Tight end Pat Carter is making his pres
ence felt in the Oilers lineup.
“The tight end has fit in naturally, and
the players haven’t faced an extraordinary
amount of learning something new,” assis
tant head coach Kevin Gilbride said. “I feel
good about Pat Carter and what he’s doing
for the team. He gives us an answer to prob
lems we’ve had in the past.”
The Oilers expect the tight end to help
scoring inside the 20, a problem for the run-
and-shoot. It didn’t work out too well in pre
season, however.
The offense scored six touchdowns in five
exhibition games, overworking kicker A1 Del
Greco, who converted 13 of 15 field goals, in
cluding 11 in a row.
