"I just hope I can do as good a job as Jimmy Johnson did, and (owner) Jerry Jones hopes I can, too,” rookie coach Barry Switzer said. Switzer watched the two- time Super Bowl champions silently most of the exhibition season. Emmitt Smith, wide re ceiver Michael Irvin and center Mark Stepnoski came back from offseason operations and the only major injury was to a second-stringer. “I thought we elevated our play right along,” Switzer said. "The only major injury we had was to (running back) Derrick Lassie. I guess we were pretty lucky.” Smith and Irvin, who had shoulder operations, and Stepnos ki, who played in his first exhibi tion game against New Orleans last Thursday, are ready to go against Pittsburgh in the first game of the season Sunday. Dallas lost 28-10 to New Or leans, but Switzer wasn’t dis- NEW YORK (AP) — Assault charges against New Jersey Nets forward Derrick Coleman were dismissed Wednesday after prose cutors told a Manhattan judge they could not prove their case. Coleman, 27, had been charged with two counts of third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harass ment for allegedly beating up three teen-agers outside a Man hattan bar. “I had no fear of the truth about the incident, but I was very concerned that the truth might not come out,” Coleman said. “I was not involved in the altercation and my only concern was that the evidence be proper ly developed to prove my inno cence. 1 am happy that the process has worked and that I have been totally exonerated of any criminal charges.^ Doreen continued from page 9 broke into the record books rush ing for 212 yards, a NCAA record for Division I freshman in his first game. Last year, , A&M's Leeland McElroy scored two touchdowns on 139 all-pur pose yards in the 24-0 A&M win. Like any series, there are those unusual circumstances that leads to a mystique that outlasts the moment. In 1988, 79,000 people in Tiger Stadium witnessed the Tigers put to gether a memorable dramatic turbed. He has learned quickly that exhibition games mean lit tle. This is the fifth year the Cowboys have been .500 or be low in the exhibition season. “Maybe it’s good we didn’t play well,” Switzer said. “It left a bad taste in our mouths. It could help us when we go out and play Pittsburgh.” Switzer said Stepnoski’s per formance eased his mind. “Stepnoski was the big thing for our offense,” Switzer said. “I thought we would fall off drasti cally if Derek Kennard had to play center. We would be short in both spots. He wouldn’t be as good as Step and we’d have to find another guard. “Step tells me he is ready to go and didn’t haven’t any prob lems. We think he can play four quarters against Pittsburgh. He’s one tough hombre.” There won’t be any dull days at Valley Ranch, win or lose an other Super Bowl. The new coach has enough one-liners to fill any note pad, and almost daily there is a new Switzerism at Switzerland, such as when he said running back coach Joe Brodsky “dog-cussed” Lincoln Coleman for fumbling. Police said the April 30 brawl broke out after one of the youths taunted Coleman about the Nets’ loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA playoffs. The incident allegedly oc curred outside Rebar, a Chelsea bar co-owned by Coleman’s teammate, Jayson Williams. Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Arlene Goldberg dis missed the charges after prose cutor Kenneth Gresham told her: “We cannot prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” said district attorney spokeswoman Jennifer English. The youths — Jacob Cruz, 19, Thomas Delgado, 16, and Ariel Roldos, 18 — have filed an $8 million lawsuit against Coleman and Williams, charging they suf fered “severe and serious in juries” in the fight. goal line stand. Defending the south end zone, LSU shut down the Ag gies despite the destruction caused by the sudden loss of light. After this stand in the 27-0 LSU win, the defense earned the nickname “Light’s Out Defense”. Another odd tale comes from the a 16-year span when the Aggies traveled to Baton Rogue to face theSoutheast Confer ence football power. It seems that legendary A&M coach Paul “Bear” Bryant signed the Aggies to the long Or when he proudly an nounced after six weeks of train ing camp he finally learned how to pronounce the name of rookie placekicker Chris Boniol. Or when he said punter John Jett “is the best punter I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot of guys kick in Colorado.” Or when he said “believe it or not I got here at 7:30 in the morning, I was so excited to see film of the Denver game.” Or “I get confused at Texas Stadium, because I don’t know which direction it runs. It’s not east-west, is it?” Or like this point about the rustiness of the first-teamers: “Just having them where they are and what they are doesn’t mean they’ll be what they are.” Got it? Dallas starts its run for a record third consecutive Super Bowl title without free agent offensive linemen Kevin Gogan and John Gesek, placekicker Eddie Murray, linebacker Ken Norton and Pro Bowl safety Thomas Everett. “Everybody is curious to see what’s going to happen,” Switzer said. “So am I.” Coleman, who was accused of sexual assault by a woman in Detroit last month but never for mally charged because the pros ecutor said there was insuffi cient evidence, said he believes the civil suit will either be dis missed or resolved in his favor. “It is unfortunate that I can’t function as a normal person in to day’s society,” Coleman said. “As a high-profile athlete, I am a tar get of people who either see dollar signs or want to take me down. “The result is that part of my freedom has been taken from me.” Eric H. Green, the lawyer for the teens, was on vacation until after Labor Day and could not be reached for comment. Coleman, the NBA’s highest paid player with a $30 million, four-year contract, wasn’t in court. series of games to earn revenue for the school (Tiger stadium was much bigger than Kyle Field) and to set up a rivalry with the nationally ranked Tigers. Bryant left for the Uni versity of Alabama before the series began. On Saturday, the LSU-A&M rivalry makes one more appear ance before next year’s finale. With a win, Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum will become the fastest SWC coach to reach the 50-win pleateau. Other great moments in history are still up for grabs. No progress with baseball strike talks NEW YORK (AP) — With both sides seemingly en trenched, there were a few distant rumblings in the stalled baseball talks. The sides were to meet separately with mediators to day, the 20th day of the strike. There has been no movement at the bargaining table for months, but away from the table there were ru mors Tuesday night of talk. Management has talked directly with the union out side the formal bargaining process but the contact did not lead to any progress, a source speaking on the condi tion he not be identified told The Associated FYess. Colorado Rockies chair man Jerry McMorris and Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Beeston spoke with the union in recent days, the source said. Eugene Orza, the union’s No. 2 official, said the source was inaccu rate. Richard Ravitch, the own ers’ negotiator, said that to his knowledge, no informal talks had been held. ESPN reported that peo ple representating the sides talked secretly by telephone in recent days and had made some limited progress. Rav itch called that report “non sense.” Daly Continued from page 7 treatment for alcohol abuse, faced paternity and palimony suits by his live-in girlfriend who later became his wife, and once trashed his own home. The latest incident occurred after Daly had shot 83 in the fi nal round of the World Series of Golf. The incident occurred short ly after Daly was confronted by Jeff Roth. Roth, who played im mediately ahead of Daly in the fi nal round at Akron, accused Daly of hitting into his group, a viola tion of golf etiquette. It was the third such accusa tion of the week against Daly. Greg Norman’s caddy and golfer Andrew Magee made the same charges earlier in the tournament. Following an exchange of words with Roth, Daly was leav ing the clubhouse when he was again confronted, this time by the player’s father, Bob Roth, 62. Another exchange ensued. Dolores Roth, wife of the elder Roth who witnessed the inci dent, said Daly cursed both Bob Roth and herself.
