AUSTIN (AP) — Edgar J.
“Bubba” Groce twice lost bids for
U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson’s seat.
Now Wilson, D-Luikin, would
n’t mind trading places with him.
“I wish he had won the elec
tion and I’d won the lottery,” Wil
son said Tuesday, the same day
Groce got a check representing
the first installment of his share
of Saturday’s $58.4 million lotto
jackpot.
Groce, a businessman from
Cleveland in Southeast Texas, is
one of three winners splitting the
grand prize.
Garland engineer Ralph
Townsend claimed his share
Monday. A Laredo man called to
say he had the third winning
ticket and was on his way to
Austin to stake his claim, said
lottery spokesman Steve Levine.
Groce was presented with an
oversize check made out for
$974,819.94 at an Austin news
conference. Like the other win
ners, he will receive installments
of $973,000 every Aug. 15 for the
next 19 years.
Asked whether he wishes he
could trade his windfall for the
congressional seat, Groce didn’t
have to think too long.
“No sir. I’d like both,” Groce
said. “I’d just rather keep my
money and let the people decide
whether they’re going to put me
in Congress.”
Groce got 13.2 percent of the
Democratic primary vote when
he ran against Wilson in 1992,
and 32.3 percent this year, ac
cording to figures from the state
Democratic Party.
He said he hasn’t ruled out
running again. But he doesn't
plan to use his lotto winnings t«
bankroll another try.
“I don’t think that spendit;
my own money would be the ai
swer to it. I mean, (unsuccessful
presidential candidate) Ross Per
ot spent how many million dol
lars of his?” Groce said.
