Mike Adams and Lovell
Pinkney will miss the No. 18
Longhorns’ season opener this
weekend because they broke
the NCAA’s amateurism rule,
coach John Mackovic said
Sunday.
Mackovic said the junior re
ceivers violated the NCAA’s
amateur status code by using
a rental car provided for them.
They apparently had the car
for about five weeks earlier
this summer, at a value of
about $1,000.
A specially appointed UT
committee investigated the in
cident and ruled the two
should be suspended for one
game and each be fined $500.
“The NCAA has confirmed
the violation,” Mackovic said
Sunday during the Southwest
Conference coaches conference
call. “At this point, we will
send everything to them and
they will make final determi
nation. If they look at it and
say it’s OK, the case is closed.”
Mackovic did not say who
gave the players the car but
said he did not believe it was a
booster or an agent.
Adams and Pinkney will
miss Saturday’s game at Pitts-
I burgh. If the NCAA allows
them to return after the one-
game suspension, Adams and
| Pinkney would play Sept. 10
in Texas’ home opener against
Louisville.
The Longhorns already
were fighting depth problems
at key offensive spots follow
ing season-ending injuries to
running back Darrell Wilson
and receivers Justin
McLemore and Wane McGari-
ty.
Before the injuries and this
probation, Texas had been
picked to win the SWC. The
Longhorns have 18 returning
starters, counting Adams and
Pinkney, from last season’s 5-
5-1 team.
The team’s top two re
ceivers last year, Adams and
Pinkney were big reasons for
UT’s success.
Adams gained 1,854 all-pur
pose yards and scored eight
touchdowns, and Pinkney
caught 47 passes for 686 yards
and five touchdowns.
But their highlights have
been overshadowed at times
by several off-field matters.
Their problems began as
freshmen when they were
kicked out of the athletic dor
mitory because of an incident
that began as a water fight.
Then they left school after
the 1993 fall semester so they
could work to repay housing
bills.
Adams was suspended from
the team for 60 days after he
was charged in June with ag
gravated assault on a police
officer and assault with bodily
injury on a woman. Adams de
nies both claims and the
woman has said he did not hit
her. That suspension ended
Sunday.

the doctor that splinted my fin

tickets, but had to give them up
after being called in to work
that afternoon.
Looking at my finger, he said
he admired my dedication as a
fan. We managed another chest-
bump before I went home. The
doctor was easily 60 years old.
The next night was the
Houston Victory Party at the
Astrodome. Turns out, Houston

series were shown, and finally
an eight-minute version of “We
Are the Champions” as the
players and coaches rode one fi
nal lap around the dome and
drove off out of sight.
Day Three:The Parade. You
