Auction, to sell pieces of state history
Artifacts removed from
Texas Capitol include
doors, drinking fountain
AUSTIN (AP) — So far, no ghosts have
been detected in the warehouse among the ar
tifacts pulled from the Texas Capitol, only a
marauding raccoon.
Still, the drafty old metal building on Trini
ty Street, off Cesar Chavez Street, is surely
home to thousands of ghosts — shades of the
politicians, lobbyists and bureaucrats who
made Texas lore meeting behind the long-leaf
pine doors now leaning against the warehouse
walls. Or debating public policy while stand
ing on the century-old boards — the ones with
square nails — that were pulled from the
House and Senate floors and now sit bundled
in one room. Or dozing through a filibuster at
their Senate desks below those ornate Plexi
glas ceiling tiles now gathering dust.
If you want to buy a chunk of Texas his
tory, or if you merely want to add a Victori
an touch to your home, you’ll have a chance
in a couple of weeks. The State Preserva-
tion Board hopes to empty the warehouse
and help defray a smidgen of the Capitol
restoration project’s $187 million cost at an
auction Sept. 9-10.
All of the items were removed from the
Capitol since the refurbishing began in Au
gust 1992. They are on the auction block be
cause they, with the exception of the 19th cen
tury floor boards, are not original to the Capi
tol. 'Hie goal of state officials is to restore the
Capitol as closely as possible to its original
1888 design, with only a few exceptions for
modem conveniences.
Most of the articles in the auction — doors,
wainscoting, transoms, molding, pediments,
stamed-glass windows — date from the post-
World War I era. Some items — including a
granite, oak and copper drinking fountain and
a bathtub from the House Speaker’s Capitol
apartment — are less than 20 years old
But all of it was made to blend into the
Capitol’s stately decor. All of it, in Dealey
Herndon’s words, was “a piece of the Capitol.”
“It’s sentimental, historical value,”
Herndon said. “It's not the value of the
wood and the glass ... I have absolutely no
idea what it will bring in because we don’t
know who will show up.”
Adi this became available because many
of the Capitol’s interior walls, essentially
glorified partitions, were removed during
the restoration.
The two-part Capitol auction will begin
at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at the warehouse at Trini-
ty and Cosar Chavez Streets, then contin-
ues the next day at 1:30 p.m. at the Travis
County Exposition and Heritage Center
Only photographs of the merchandise will
be displayed at the Heritage Center.
The public can see the merchandise from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 6-8 and all day Sept. 9 at
the warehouse.

Preservation Board at 512-463-5495.

SEVEN POINTS, Texas (AP)
— The police chief of this small
community has been suspended,
accused of using city equipment
to take photographs of a nude
woman in his office.
Chief Robert Young was sus
pended for 90 days with pay Aug.
18 after the Polaroid pictures
were seized from his safe, council
members said.
The chief took some photos
back in his office using city
equipment and (they) were ob
scene photos taken during the
day, on duty,” Councilman Gary
Dunn said. “He violated our
trust by doing this.”
A tip from one of Young’s own
officers caused Mayor Marian
Hill to order other officers to
search Young’s office, KDFW-TV

Councilman Lew Seaton said
the council engaged in heated de
bate about the pictures for two
hours. A motion to fire Young
failed, but the council voted to
suspend him, Seaton said.
Seaton, who considers Young
a close friend, said he didn’t
like the way the council han
dled the situation.
‘All I can say was they did
break into the office to get the pic
tures. To me it was breaking in.
They took the lock off,” he said.
Young was not immediately
available for comment Tuesday.
His home telephone number is
unlisted.
Seven Points is about 48 miles
southeast of Dallas and has a six-
person police department.
