Pag< Con Fill shi Au ! Page 4 C Veterans settle for pay cut Salary cap forces teams to reduce pay to players ' CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — For Washington Redskins linebackers Kurt Gouveia and Monte Cole man the choice was between a pay cut or a final cut. “We make a lot of money, and I feel blessed to have an opportuni ty to come out and play,” Coleman said. “Even with the pay cut, I feel blessed.” Coleman tied for the team lead with six sacks and two fumble re coveries last year, his 15th with the team. He has played in four Super Bowls and on three cham pionship teams. He is also 36 years old and last month accepted a cut in his salary, from $525,000 to $400,000. “I’ve got five kids and I’ve got a wife, that’s why I do it,” Coleman The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569/ Fax 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building ‘AGGIE’ Private Party Want Ads < O a. to $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandies is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). That didn’t hinder or help my decision, but this league has changed.” Gouveia, an eight-year veter an, led the team in tackles the last two years. He has been in jured frequently and plans call for him to share time at middle line backer. Gouveia’s $1.02 million salary made him an expensive addition under the salary cap. He was re leased in late June but resigned July 5 for $500,000. Safety Brad Edwards is the latest Redskin to leave rather than accept a pay cut. Others who quit over money are Art Monk, Charles Mann and Mark Rypien. Some in the league have swal lowed their pride for the chance to keep playing. Arizona Cardinals defensive back Chuck Cecil was to make $1.2 million but was cut to $350,000. Eric Bieniemy, a run ning back with the San Diego Chargers, was lowered from $377,000 to $250,000. And former Redskin wide receiver Gary Clark, now with Arizona, took a 30 percent salary cut to $915,000. The kick's away and it's good! Former Texas A&M place-kicker Terry Venetoulias attempts a 55-yard kick while his brother Manoli holds. The kick was good. Venetoulias, who graduated last year, was practicing with his brother, who will be a freshman at A&M this fall and is hopeful for his older brother’s vacat ed position. Approximately 1,500 volunteers will serve over the three days of the Games. Sears said it was nice to have so much support. “It’s a big community effort,” Sears said. “It’s neat to see everyone out there and helping to get this done.” Injury to Wellman gives receiver a shot at starting rc X ANTONIO Dr. James Andrews of Birm- gham, Ala., who performed hip surgery on Bo Jackson, recon- not slow, What you find is guys who don’t have the “ that way.*’ I The Oilers offered Browi "Dr. Andrews said. To Place Your Ad In The Battalion Ca# 845-2696 Switzer Continued from Page 3 FVetty soon it goes away. “The players have been great. They’ve been working very hard and I feel comfortable being back in the game again.” Switzer said all the contro versy that surrounded his hir ing by owner Jerry Jones will go away if the team wins. Switzer hasn’t coached in five years since he was forced to re tire at Oklahoma, where he won two national champi onships. “Winning takes care of everything,” Switzer said. “I know I’ve really missed the game, being around the play ers. It’s good to be back.” Switzer spent the first part of training camp evaluating the players, particularly the defen sive line, where some young sters must come through. Hall of Famers getting fewer Players from 1 920s, 30s see changes in the game UNDATED - Only a dozen members of the Baseball Hall of Fame who played in the 1920s and ’30s are still alive and, as one of them wryly ob serves, they’re getting closer to end of the bench. Bill Dickey died last fall, Ray Dandridge early this year. Ted Williams is recovering from a second stroke. Early Wynn, Buck Leonard and Lou Boudreau are ailing, too. Rick Ferrell is plugging along nicely at 88 in Detroit, as is A1 Lopez at 85 in Tampa. Joe DiMaggio still loves to go to the race track in Florida and keep to himself. Bobby Doerr lives comfortably on a farm in Oregon, Enos Slaugh ter on his farm in North Car olina. Monte Irvin is doing fine in Florida, Red Schoendi- enst in Missouri, and Bob Feller can often be found at Cleveland Indians games. They are a trove of wonder ful stories, and when they are gone a significant part of American sports history will disappear. As three new mem bers of the Hall of Fame await induction Sunday — Steve Carlton, Phil Rizzuto and the late Leo Durocher — some of those who preceded them spoke about the way baseball was when every game was played on grass and every team rode the rails. Many of them will journey to Cooperstown, N.Y., to wit ness the ceremonies and re new old ties, all of them part of a unique brotherhood and a vanished time. There was a different sense of manliness back then, an un written code of behavior on and off the field that seems quaint or even foolish today. No water was allowed during games even in the worst heat, and no one munched snacks on the bench even near the end of a doubleheader. Major leaguers wore heavy flannels and wouldn’t think of adorning themselves with ear rings or gold chains. “You’d be joked out of the league,” Ferrell said.
