Jose Canseco hit his 27th home
run, leading Brian Bohanon and
Texas past Minnesota 7-4 Mon
day night and ending their four-

Rusty Greer had a pair of RBI
singles and two walks for Texas.
Bohanon (1-0) won for the
first time in the majors since

In his second start of the sea

He struck out five and walked
two.
Darren Oliver got three outs

Richardson
Continued from Page 3
displayed. Twice he led the
Oilers to come-from-behind
winning touchdowns, once re
lying on a left-handed pass to
keep a drive alive.
You would think that with
Warren Moon being traded to
Minnesota, Richardson would
move into back-up role, behind
“Commander” Cody Carlson.
Wrong.
This is the Houston Oilers
we’re talking about. They’ve
never done anything logically.
Carlson was elevated to the
starting role and the Oilers ac
quired Sean Salisbury to be
his back-up.
The same Salisbury who
went l-of-8 for 19 yards dur
ing the scrimmage with the
Dallas Cowboys.
Much can be said for Salis
bury’s performance during
practice. Many say he’s hav
ing a good training camp.
Well, that doesn’t mean a
damn thing on the playing
field.
Practice is practice, but if
Salisbury can’t get it done
during the heat of competition
then he doesn’t deserve to be
the back-up. It’s kind of like
having a gimpy vice-president.
If anything happens to the
president, the vice-president
is in charge.
If anything happens to
Carlson, guess who gets the
starting nod. Do the Houston
Oilers really want Sean Sal-
isury as their starting quar
terback?
Richardson is a much more
viable candidate for the job.
He might not be the best prac
tice player, but he gets the job
done during the game.
He is a leader on the field
and his emotion and desire to
win can spark a team to victo
ry.
He is a blue-collar type
player who does whatever it
takes to win football games.
Can the same be said about
Salisbury?
That remains to be seen.

Despite the criticism of many
around the league and even Bud
dy Ryan, Pardee’s former defen
sive coordinator, the coach plans
to stick to the run-and-shoot as a
base offense.
“We can’t let the run-and-shoot
get away from us,” Pardee said,
“There were several rule changes
in the off-season, and all of them
help the run-and-shoot,”
Several rule changes were put
in effect to spur more scoring in
the league; specifically, Pardee
cited the change that restricted
defensive backs’ contact with re
ceivers in secondary:
“It’s certainly not supposed to
With the adapted offense head
ing into last Saturday’s scrim
mage with the Dallas Cowboys,
former A&M quarterback Bucky
Richardson said the team needed
some hard work to implement the
new sets.
“It’s our first real taste of live
action,” Richardson said. “We
need to stick to fundamentals and
see what happens.
“We put most of the offense in
in a week, and we need to just go
out and run our basic offense.”
Entering his third training
camp, Richardson said he felt his
best about this one. With the de
parture of Warren Moon,
Richardson is vying to be
Pardee’s second-string quarter
back against free agent signee
Sean Salisbury from the Min
nesota Vikings.
“I’d love to be number two,”
Richardson said. “It’s something
that I’m not preoccupied with,
though, and I’ll let the coaches
decide it.
“I’ve got a lot of goals, but I
keep a lot of them to myself. If
the team wins, I’m happy.”
With McCants, former Pitts
burgh Steeler Kenny Davidson
and two high draft choices com
peting, Pardee said the Oilers
had effectively covered their
bases at the end position. Plus,
at 6-foot-3-inches and 252
pounds, the Oilers’ coaches will
try to polish outside linebacker
Lamar Lathon into a pass-rush
specialist on the line.
‘The players still have to work
for it,” Pardee said, “but we’ve got
an excellent shot (at solidifying
the defensive line.)”
At each position, Pardee pa
trols the different groups during
the camp. The temperatures soar
past 100 degrees on the field at
Trinity University as the players
sprint and tackle, baking inside
steaming pads and nylon jerseys.
But just like the rest of the
players’ problems, Pardee’s been
there, too - and beyond it.

Beside Salisbury, the most im
portant personnel changes will
come on the defensive line, where
the departures of Jones and
Fuller leave only one marquee
name in the front four — former
A&M defensive lineman Ray
Childress.
Childress disagreed with his
tackle-mate, Glenn Montgomery,
after hearing Montgomery’s claim
that the two tackles must have
their best seasons to off-set the
unknowns at the end positions.
Childress said he would certainly
like to have his best year, but
that the team would survive,
nonetheless.
Pardee said the Oilers had
foreseen the salary cap difficul-
As an All-America fullback at
Texas A&M, Jack Pardee trav
eled with his teammates to Junc
tion, Texas in 1954. Aggie coach
Paul “Bear” Bryant bused the
team of about 80-120 players
about 100 miles Northwest of San
Antonio to the small drought-
plagued town on Interstate 10.
Bryant put the A&M crew
through its paces in the days
when drinking water during 100
degree weather was frowned on
as a weakness. Three-fourths of
the team didn’t return from Junc
tion, but Jack Pardee did.
1 Childress, who has played foot
ball in Texas since his high school
days in Richardson, said through
the years he has adjusted to the
Texas heat. When asked if he
has taken to liking to the weath
er, he said:
“Not particularly.”
Pardee agreed with Childress,
saying it was very unlikely the
camp could be moved to Junction,
where Pardee could put the play
ers through what he went
through under Bryant.
“If I had all the players out
there,” Pardee chuckled, “they’d
probably arrest me.”
But he has dealt with worse
problems.
