lem when it comes to enforcing
the curfew.
If Bryan decides to enact a cur
few, Freeman said, it could cause
a problem for College Station.
“If Bryan did (implement the
curfew), and College Station did
not, it would be pushing prob
lems south,” he said. “I would
also have a real concern if Col
lege Station passed it and Bryan
did not. And as far as I know,
they have no intention of propos
ing it at this time.”
Maj. Mason Newton of the
College Station Police Depart
ment said College Station will
not propose a teenage curfew
just because Bryan does.
“I don’t believe if Bryan did it
we would have to also,” he said.
“We have discussed it, but not
formally. Our thoughts are ‘it’s
not necessary.’”
Newton said a curfew would
be difficult to enforce. More per
sonnel would have to be hired,
and it still would not be effective
unless it was enforced.
He said it is not an issue the
city should have to deal with.
“We-parents, society and the
police-need to deal with trouble
makers,” he said. “By having a
curfew, I think that is punish
ing everybody.”
Marvin Tate, mayor of Bryan,
said there has not officially been
a proposed ordinance, and there
will be more discussion before a
decision is made.
Tate said enforcing the curfew
could be a problem for the city,
and advantages and disadvan
tages are still being evaluated.
“Right now our police are so
busy and having the added re
sponsibility of enforcing a teen
curfew concerns me,” he said.
“We are looking into the trends
toward teen curfews in some
major cities, but I think we
have to evaluate it on what is
good for Bryan.”

James also said Richards has
been important in changing the
educational system, reforming
the prison system and improv-
campaign.
“He said he thinks she is a
fine person,” Stadelmann said.
“He does not want this to become
a campaign of negative attacks.”
James said the Richards
campaign is not planning nega
tive attacks either.
“I would love to see both of
them stay clear of that,” he said,
“but I’ve never seen a clean
campaign in Texas,”
Withers said no fall events
have been decided on by the
College Republicans.
“We definitely plan to get a
large youth vote out," he said,
“because we feel the youth of
Texas are leaning toward what
George W. Bush and what the
Republican party stand for,”
Eric Gruetzner, president of
the Aggie Democrats, said the
organization will focus its ef
forts on spreading information
about Gov. Richards and her
record in office.
“We’re definitely going to get
her to try to come to campus,”
he said. “When she was here in
April, she told ufe she wanted to
come here this fall.”
Stadelmann said Bush will
likely visit the campus as well.
Lisa Halperin, a researcher
with the Public Policy Resources
Laboratory, which conducts the
Texas Poll, said there are no re
cent poll results for the gover
nor’s race. But a poll in April
showed Richards had a 44 per
cent to 39 percent lead over
Bush, a margin of error of ±
percent.
