T exas A&M will renovate
the E.B. Cushing Library
in spring 1995.
The Cushing Library opened in
1930 as the first library on cam
pus and is now connected to the
Sterling C. Evans Library.
Designed by Texas architect
C.S.P. Vosper, it was consid
ered one of the nicest buildings
on the campus.
David Chapman, Texas A&M
archivist, said A&M expanded
faster than planned, making a
new library necessary to accom
modate the campus’ growth.
“By the late 1960s, the cam
pus had outgrown Cushing,” he
said. “It became merely an ap
pendage of the larger Sterling
C. Evans Library.”
For the next few years the
building served a variety of pur
poses, including housing the office
of the dean of education.
Time and numerous remod
eling attempts took their toll on
the building. The roof leaked
and the walls were cracking.
The air conditioning system, in
stalled in the 60s, became in
creasingly unreliable.
The Cushing Library will un
dergo renovations to protect the
collections housed in the building.
Chapman said the material
in the Cushing Library is being
moved to make room for reno
vations.
Archives that have been in
the Cushing Library for 20
years are now in room 210 of
the Evans Library.
“Most heavy items will be put
in various places in Evans Li
brary,” Chapman said. “The re
mainder of the material will be
moved into the old Texas Instru
ments building where we have
temporary use of space.”
The University plans to start
renovations on Cushing this April.
“The tentative plans are to re
store the Library back to the
grandeur of its original construc
tion in the 1930s,” he said.
Concrete floors will be put in
where there are currently me
stacks. This will triple the cont
capabilities of the building.
Dr. Charles Schultz, Cleme
archivist, said that by April li
part of the renovated build
should be completed.
“There are now eight lev
of stacks that will become fi
floors of compact motori
shelving,” he said. “By A
1996, two of the four floors
planned to be completed.”
Chapman said when the
vations are done, material will
moved back into-the building.
Special collections, mai
scripts and archives will be c<
bined into one large division f
moved back into Cushing
unit, he said.
Schultz said Cushing will
house offices and research
Dr. Fred Heath, dean and
rector of Evans Library, said
renovation of the Cushing Libr
provides a welcome opportur
to restore an edifice of great:
torical significance here at Te
A&M.
