cause enrollment is limited at the
Temple campus.
Smith said the building is a
major step forward in responding
to the needs of Texas citizens.
Mary Nan West, chair of the
Board of Regents, said she
thought it was a good deal be
cause Scott & White would fi
nance half of the center.
“It was a unanimous vote and I
think that knowledge and the
medical world will be enhanced by
it,” she said.
The plans will be presented to
the Board of Regents at their July
meeting, Smith said.
The Texas A&M College of
Medicine, established in 1973, is
the result of the combined efforts
of Texas A&M, the Olin E. Teague
Veterans’ Center, Scott & White
Hospital and Clinic, Darnall Army
Community Hospital at Fort Hood
and the Veterans Affairs Medical
Center in Waco.
The land for the new building
was donated by the Scott, Sher
wood and Brindley Foundation of
Scott & White.
The A&M clinical campus in
Temple currently enrolls 100 med
ical students and 225 post-gradu
ate medical residents. For the
past two years, the college has
had the highest percentage of
graduates entering family practice
residencies.
