The Dream
Continued from Page 7
round of the playoffs starts.
It will be a re-match of the NCAA Championship
game of 10 years a^o between Ewing’s Georgetown
Hoyas and Olajuwon s Houston Cougars. That day, the
glory belonged to Ewing in a 84-75 conquest, but
urings have changed in the last decade.
Back to the remainder of the playoffs, just in case
you want to invest a little “sell-back- your-books”
money, and pull in a little profit.
Obviously, the Rockets and Knicks are going to both
win the remainder of their series. In the East, the
Knicks will dump the Nets, then enjoy another memo
rable series with the Bulls, before eliminating diem hi
seven. The Bulls will not be playing in June for die first
time since I got my driver’s license.
The Pacers, having already shed their mediocre label
by sweeping Orlando and the Shaq Attaq hi the first
round, but will run out of gas agahist the Hawks hi the
second round. Danny Mannhig will remember how to
score, and lead die Hawks to die conference finals.
Although Atlanta will have home court advantage
agahist the Knicks, but that fine Georgia city has as big a
choke label as Houston (until now), and the Knicks will
take it all in six.
Over to the Western Conference, where any one of
three teams could adequately manhandle die Knicks or
anyone other team from the (L) eastern conference.
Sorry Spurs fans, but it is going to be another early
exit from the playoffs for the Admiral and die Delin
quent.
The semi-final matchups will be the Sorties against
the Jazz, and die Rockets agahist the Suns.
Karl Malone and John Stockton are starting to show
their advancing age. The Jazz added Jeff Homacek ear
lier this year in a trade, but still don’t have any kind of
depth compared to Seattle.
My easiest prediction in diis whole column is that
Charles Barkley is not going to score 56 points against
the Rockets like he did against Golden State on Wednes
day night, especially if the Rockets use Olajuwon to
guard him as they often did in the two teams’ regular
season match-ups. In a match-up of the Suns’ up-tem
po offense against the Rockets’ stifling defense. I’ll go
with the Rockets in six.
The Western Conference championship will be the
real Finals, much like the Dallas-San Francisco NFC tide
game this year was the real Super Bowl.
The Sonics enjoy what appears to be the difference,
the home court advantage in what has been the most
home-and-home series in die NBA in the past two years.
The Sonics are as deep a team, but the Rockets have
the one player who can and is dominating the game at
bodi ends of the court more than any other player in
the last 10 years. The Trail Blazers haven’t figured out a
way to hold Olajuwon under 35 points in any of the
three games so far in the first round.
The Sonics will try Michael Cage, Sam Perkins and
Shawn Kemp to stop Olajuwon, but it won’t work.
In die end, in Seatde, the Rockets will stun the Super-
sonics and their fans with a one-point victory. Olaju
won should have 40-50 points.
After all die fast-breaking offenses the Rockets will
face in the Western Conference, the Knicks’ plodding
style will come as a relief to Rudy Tomjanovich and his
players.
With a championship trophy within his grasp and
matched up against another marquee center, Olajuwon
will take his game up to a level that makes a Hall of
Earner what he is.
Decision, Houston. Six rounds. Knock-out.
My Dream will become the rest of the NBA’s night
mare.

remembered far longer than the fantastic
finish. Several Tech fans, displeased
with their sudden, unexpected loss at
tempted to confront A&M players and
coaches as the Aggies ran off the court
towards die visitors’ locker room. Push
ing and shoving followed, with Joe
Wilbert throwing the "Punch Heard
‘Round die Nation” that leveled one of
the Tech interlopers.
Back at G. Rollie White that same
night, the Lady Aggies stunned Tech by
scoring die last six points of die game to
take a 67-64 win diat fonner coach Lynn
Hickey called die biggest of her career.
The men’s team arrived back from
Lubbock during the second half, and
stood with the rest of the season-high
crowd of 3,102 for die remainder of the
game.
When the final buzzer sounded, and
the fans stormed the court, Chuck Hen
derson performed his best moves of the
day by dodging through the crowd to
find sophomore point guard I.isa
Branch, who led the Aggies with 19
points, and lofting her high up on his
shoulder in celebration.
The women’s team appeared on the
brink of domination, starting four
sophomores for most of the season.
Point guard Lisa Branch was named SWC
women’s player of the year, while
sophomore post players Mardia McClel
land and Kelly Cemy became a punish
ing 1-2 pimeh inside.
The men’s team said good-bye this
season to quite simply the greatest guard
A&M has ever known in David Edwards.
Edwards enjoyed a tremendous season,
and could be playing in the NBA come
November. Also emerging big-time for
A&M was Wilbert, originally from
Bryan. Wilbert gave the Aggies a legiti
mate inside game to complement the
outside shooting of Edwards, Henderson
and company. Wilbert was slowed
down die stretch by an injury above his
eye, but regained his top fonn in the Ag-
tne
re SWC Touma-
gies two victories m
ment.
Both Aggie teams wound up finishing
second in die conlerence, but had players
who enjoyed banner seasons, and both
were invited to post-season action.
The men ganiered a bid to the NIT
tournament, and loss a heart-breaking

overtime loss at the University of New
Orleans. The women one-upped the
13th seec
men however, gaining a 13th seed in
the NCAA tournament. In their first
game, they knocked off Florida, the No.
4 seed in their region, then advanced to
the Sweet 16, the highest seed ever to do
so, by knocking off San Diego State at
home. Unfortunately, the Lady Aggies
ran into a powerful Purdue team in Cali
fornia. The Lady Aggies ended up
ranked 19th in the final USA
Today/CNN poll.
Early February means baseball in col
lege towns, and die boys of Olsen Field
appeared geared up for another champi
onship run when they opened their sea
son ranked as high as tliird nationally.
The team ran off nine consecutive victo
ries to start the year, including a three-
game sweep at perennial power Arizona.
But then the wheels came off the
wagon. The Aggies started off the
Southwest Conference season by being
swept by rival Texas, then again at Rice.
Suddenly, the College World Series
looked like a dream, and a more imme
diate goal became making the SWC
tournament, which the Aggies were
scheduled to host in mid-May.
The team did not pick up its first con
ference win until the first weekend in
April against die University of Houston.
The Aggies, however, ended the SWC
season with a lethargic 6-12 record.
The pitching staff was the source of
many of the team’s woes, as the team
lost two aces in Jeff Granger and Kelly
Wunscli to the major league draft. Also
gone from the team was heavy hitter
Brian Thomas, whose homeruti bat
could not be replaced. The pitching staff
will again have to start patching itself
again next year, as it is expected that un
derclassmen pitchers Trey Moore and
Cliris Clemons will declare their eligibili
ty for the upcoming draft.
While die men ballplayers struggled,
their female softball counterparts more
dian picked up the slack. Playing in their
new oallpark, the team, currently ranked
11th in the country, has been aominat-
ing the whole season as they make a bid
for the World Series. The team has
been led by All-American Jennifer Mc-
Falls, who recendy won the Female Ath
lete of the Year award at the women’s
athletic banquet, and Kim Gonzalez,
who has already racked up nearly 30
wins this year.
