Vail memorial to honor slain journalists
Hie Associated Press
WASHINGTON — A wall' con
fining the names of journalists
lied around the world will be built
honor their memory, the Free-
iomForum announced Tuesday.
Charles L. Overby, president of
ike forum, a foundation working
loprotect and encourage free
jitess, said the wall will be located
tike forum’s headquarters in Ar-
; two"
lington, Va., across the river from
Washington. It will be part of a
museum called the “Newseum.”
The announcement was made
during ceremonies marking Inter
national Press Freedom day.
“We cannot have freedom
while journalists are being killed,”
Overby said in a speech.
In an interview, he said the
names for the wall would come
from the Committee to Protect
Journalists, which has document
ed cases of journalists being
killed on the job or because of
their work since the committee
was formed in 1981.
William Orme, executive direc
tor of the committee, said the num
ber of journalists killed in that peri
od is not exactly known but it is
“many hundreds, if not thousands.”
