Rangers slip by
Tribe; Astros fall
to the Cardinals
The Associated Press
Rangers 5, Indians 4
CLEVELAND — Will Clark’s sac
rifice fly capped a two-run ninth
inning Sunday as the Texas Rangers
beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 for
their fifth win in the last six games.
The Indians took a 4-3 lead into
the ninth, but their bullpen blew
the save for the eighth time in 1 6
chances this year.
Derek Lilliquist gave up a leadoff
double to Manuel Lee, who moved
to third on a fly to right and scored
on Oddibe McDowell’s infield sin
gle off Jose Mesa (3 -1).
Jose Canseco singled McDowell
to third — Canseco’s third hit —
and Clark followed with the win
ning fly ball off Brian Barnes. Lee
also had three hits.
Cardinals 6, Astros 5
HOUSTON — Bob Tewksbury
became the first six-game winner
in the majors when Gregg Jefferies
singled home the go-ahead run in
the eighth inning Sunday, giving
the St. Louis Cardinals a 6-5 victory
over the Houston Astros.
Ray Lankford homered on the
first pitch of the game. He has led
off three games with homers this
year, including a shot as the first
batter of the season.
Tewksbury (6-0) allowed five
runs and nine hits in seven innings.
He struck out five and walked
none. He took a 5-2 lead into the
sixth, but Luis Gonzalez tied it with
a three-run homer.
Stars to face
Canucks in
second round
The Associated Press
DALLAS — The Dallas
Stars have finally learned who
their next opponents will be
in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Vancouver Canucks de
feated the Calgary Flames, 4-
3, in overtime Saturday in
Game 7 of the playoff quar
terfinals.
From the Stars’ point of
view, the Canucks might have
been worth waiting ror. Dal
las, host for Monday’s semifi
nal opener, won all but one of
its four regular-season games
against the Canucks.
Stars defenseman Craig
Ludwig said he may feel an
advantage over Vancouver
when they face off at Reunion
Arena on Monday, but not be
cause of their regular-season
history together.
