Employees get

The Associated Press
DALLAS — Most companies i
courage their employees from stir
ing out the window.
Then again, most companit!
don’t have red-tailed hawks nestia;
outside their windows.
At Lomas Mortgage

“Sometimes you walkoutoi
a patio and see the hawks comt

company’s vice president for cor

incredible sight.”

natural resources of Texas.
"A significant percentage of
state agencies have found thej
can save money, use a Texas prod

“It is really a major success story"
Richards said the federal gw-
eminent has threatened to cut off
all funding to the state if the tt-
vironment is not cleaned up
soon.
“If we don’t take these specific
actions, they’re going to shut the
spigot off,” she said. "Tin!
means that we don't get highway
funds, Medicaid funds or any of
the federal money that we have
come to depend on.”
One resident asked how the
state is working toward health
care.
“The biggest concern Texas
has is that our Medicaid fundinp
remain intact,” Richards said.
President Clinton’s health care
plan will probably not be passed
intact, she said, so any specula
tion now on what the state can
do is just a guess.
“I do not believe that the cob-
gress is willing to take the heat
for passing one with immediate
universal coverage,” she said.
Another citizen was con
cerned about the future of the
proposed high-speed rail system,
Mary Scott Nabors, a member
of the High Speed Rail Authority:
said the department is currently
debating removing the contrac
tor’s license for failing to meet
some conditions of the contract.
Several residents asked about
problems they were having with
state agencies and brought to
light possible scams.
The respective agency head:
promised to look into the scams.
Richards started the program,
which brings tire government to
selected cities, as a result of feed
back sire was getting about the
government being “out of
touch."
“We really are here to hear
what you have to say," she said.
"We want state government to
focus its energies and its timefoi
at least a brief period to the local
communities and the people
where, they live.”

Richards went on to praise
Margraves for his devotion to
A&M.
“His devotion to this University
is extraordinary,” Richards said, '1

Richards said she would con

made her decision.
Margraves, Class of‘63, wasap-

replaced William McKenzie as
chairman in 1991.
His term would have expii
