At one point during last season, Gonzalez threw 49 of A&M's 52 games. Gonzalez Continued from Page 7 It was a decision that was both hard on Gonzalez and the team but the outcome pro duced success. Last year the team was at a crisis when Gonzalez was left as the only starting pitcher on the team. Brock said when she came she was not the featured pitcher but the change made her develop as a pitcher and a person. “Her personality changed,” Brock said. “She became a winner.” Gonzalez said she was al ways in the shadows hut she had to step up and take charge. The whole team was down but she said she would do what it takes to win. “I can take on the responsi bility. I will do whatever it takes,” she said. Gonzalez took charge by pitching a staggering 49 out of A&M’s 5 2 games last year. She held opponents to a .189 batting average with a 1.1 3 earned run average. The hard work paid off when she was elected this year as a team captain. "It kind of took me by sur prise,” she said. “I never thought about it. I was hon ored. ’ She currently has a record of 24-7 with a 0.92 ERA and is second in the nation in wins.
