Bats find new home in S.A. high school

SAN ANTONIO — About 50 Mexican free-tail
bats made themselves at home in a wing of Roo
sevelt High School on Monday, so about 700 stu
dents moved out.
Many of the unwanted hangers-on were clus
tered in twos and threes on the ceiling. Others were
napping in the upper corners of a stairwell.
The invaded wing will remain closed until all the
bats have been evicted. The students moved to the
auditorium and cafeteria to hold classes.
Tim Hanks, owner of Commercial Bat Control,
told the school that releasing the bats is preferable
to killing them since their bodies would create an
offensive odor and pose a possible health hazard.
“They’re basically very narmless,” he said. “Oth
erwise, I wouldn’t be in this business. I’ve been bit
ten several times, but the bats have very small
indcr]
teeth.”
