Office, Room 127 of the Koldus Building Computinq Toolbox A weekly column dedicated to computing at Texas A&M Walk into any one of the computer labs around campus and you're likely to see several people furiously typing at a keyboard, but apparently having a good time. If it seems that using a computer and having a good time contradict each other, then you probably haven’t been introduced to the wonderful world of electronic mail. Electronic mail, or e-mail, is a program running on a computer that is connected to other computers. When using electronic mail, you to send a message to another person much like you would send a letter via the U.S. Postal Service. Electronic mail has several advantages over traditional paper mail. First, it doesn’t cost you a stamp. All you need is a logon-ID on a computer that runs an e-mail program. All students at Texas A&M pay a computer access fee as part of their class registration, and almost all of the multi-user computers at Texas A&M are on a network with an electronic mail program. Getting started with electronic mail is simply a matter of setting up your L6gon-ID. For instructions on how to set up a Logon-ID, drop by one of the Computing and Information Services (CIS) Help Desks. Secondly, the electronic mail message is delivered quickly. It doesn’t matter whether you're sending the message across campus or across the ocean; in most cases, your message is delivered within seconds. Third, since the other person doesn't have to be currently using their computer when you send mail, you can avoid playing the telephone "tag" games. When you send someone a message, it's stored in their incoming mail box until they read their mail. Electronic mail has numerous advantages in the classroom. The quality of your learning experience is very much dependent upon the quality of your communication with your teachers and with other students outside the classroom. Electronic mail can not only expand existing channels of communication inside and outside the classroom and the class meeting time but open new ones as well. From computers in their office, home, or lab, instructors and students can conduct extended dialogues. You can use electronic mail to send class or research notes to other people when convenient. Because you don't have to be logged on when mail arrives, students working on a project can communicate back and forth without having to coordinate their schedules. Through the file sending capabilities of electronic mail and networking in general, an instructor can make a wide variety of materials available to stu dents. Syllabi, class notes, assignments, instructions and study aids can be sent to students instantly. Students can also use the network for submitting assignments. Instructors can receive student papers, save them to files, make notations, and return them quickly and relatively painlessly. In addition to these advantages, there is another feature of electronic mail that might interest you. You can subscribe to mailing lists and electronic bulletin boards and be in contact with a world of people discussing an endless number of topics. For more information on using electronic mail and subscribing to electronic mailing lists and bulletin boards, contact your nearest CIS Help Desk. te cm smtc Need Help?
