ABC, CBS reach
‘virtual tie’ in
Nielsen ratings
The Associated Press
NEW YORK — ABC beat CBS by
a tenth of a rating point —- or
about 94;200 viewers — for a
“virtual tie” or a “narrow victo
ry,” depending on who’s inter
preting the weekly prime-time
Nielsen ratings.
ABC averaged a 12.3 rating to
CBS’ 12.2, both earning a 21 per
cent share of the audience. NBC was
a distant third, with a 9.2 rating, 16
share. Fox, which programs only 1 5
of the 22 prime time hours, had a
6.5 rating, 1 1 share.
One rating point equals 942,000
homes, or 1 percent of the 94.2
million U.S. TV households estimat
ed by Nielsen Media Research. Share
is the percentage of sets tuned in
during a specific time period; in this
case, March 28-April 3.
ABC edged CBS with the top
three shows: No. 1 “Home Im
provement,” “Roseanne” and the
premiere of the Ellen DeGeneres sit
com “These Friends of Mine’’ at
No. 3.
All told, ABC had six of the Top
10 programs, including a “ham
mock” of two episodes of “Home
Improvement’’ before and after
the “These Friends of Mine” pre
miere, as well as a Tuesday "pre
view” of the new show.
ABC’s other premiere, the Fri
day sitcom “Sister, Sister,’’ star
ring Tia and Tamera Mowry, pre
viewed in 18th place at 7:30 p.m.
behind “Family Matters,” and de
buted in 2 7 th place an hour later
behind “Step by Step.”
ABC won Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday nights; CBS won Mon
day, Saturday and Sunday nights,
and NBC won Thursday night.
Of the evening news shows,
ABC’s “World News Tonight” was
first, with a 9.9 rating, 20 share;
“NBC Nightly News’’ was second,
at 9.0, 19, and ‘‘CBS Evening
News’’ was third, at an 8.6 rating,
1 7 share.
Here are the Top 1 0 shows,
their networks and ratings:
“Home Improvement,” ABC,
24.4; “Roseanne,” ABC, 21.6;
“These Friends of Mine,” pre
miere, ABC, 19.2; “Seinfeld,”
NBC, 18.3; “CBS Sunday Movie:
Christy,” CBS, 17.7; “Frasier,”
NBC, 17.7; “Home Improve
ment,” special, ABC, 17.6; "These
Friends of Mine,” preview, ABC,
17.6; “Thunder Alley,” ABC, 16.9;
“Murphy Brown,” CBS, 16.8.
