AUSTIN — Texas drivers who
opt to take a defensive driving class
to get a traffic ticket dismissed will
soon be able to do so without leav
ing the comfort of home.
Two Houston entrepreneurs
have teamed up with an Austin
business to provide a method for
taking the state-approved, six-hour
course at home with the aid of
videos and a minicomputer, both
supplied by the company.
Inconvenience is a chief reason
only 8 percent of Texas drivers
who are ticketed take defensive
driving courses, said Phil Ward,
president of SA Training Co. of
Austin, which provides its safety
course to more than 250 schools
across Texas.
Drivers who choose the take-
home course have three days to
complete it and may log on to
the interactive computer system
— via a toll-free phone line — at
any hour. Another toll-free line
has a live instructor on stand-by
at all times to field questions
from students.
Since mid-January, the take
home kits have been available only
through two Houston outlets.
More than 600 people have used
them, said Scott Owens, one of the
developers of the system. Ward
said he believes all of the schools
affiliated with USA Training — in
cluding several in Austin — will
have the equipment by the end of
the summer.
Owens said reaction from stu
dents has been positive, even
though the $40 course cost is
more expensive than classroom in
struction, which ranges from $ 1 5
to $30. The system includes a sim-
ple-to-use computer and videos
that feature music by ZZ Top and
James Brown and appearances by
Jerry Seinfeld, Hulk Hogan and
other celebrities. The videos fea
tures comedian Jeff Altman.
“You mention to people a ‘take-
home defensive driving course,’
and the light bulb goes off,’’ he
said. "They think: ‘I can fast for
ward the video. I can have some
one take the test for me,’ But, hard
as you might try, you can’t beat
the system.
Owens said safeguards were

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS WHERE
PEOPLE ARE PUTTING
TOO MANY RETIREMENT DOLLARS.
-
E very year, a lot of people make a
huge mistake on their taxes. They
don’t take advantage of tax deferral and
wind up sending Uncle Sam money they
could be saving for retirement.
Fortunately, that’s a mistake you can
easily avoid with TIAA-CREF SRAs.
SRAs not only ease your current tax-
bite, they offer a remarkably easy way
to build retirement income—especially
for the “extras’’ that your regular pension
and Social Security benefits may not
cover. Because your contributions are
made in before-tax dollars, you pay less
taxes now. And since all earnings on
your SRA are tax-deferred as well, the
money you don’t send to Washington
works even harder for you. Down the
road, that can make a dramatic difference
in your quality of life.
What else makes SRAs so special?
A range of allocation choices—from the
guaranteed security of T1AA to the
diversified investment accounts of
CREF’s variable annuity—all backed
by the nation’s number one retirement
system.
Why write off the chance for a more
rewarding retirement? Call today and
