indufeHturn. Others were village elders
trance ft deported by Israel in the 1970s.
on excliii.fi The deportees are famous in-
iranceba side the occupied territories, but
conditiot also worked in Arafat’s Tunis
headquarters, and are expected to
help smooth public acceptance of
a PLO leadership that has not
lived under occupation.
“One of our first responsibili
ties is to put an end to the in
fighting within our ranks,” said
Rashid Abu Shbak.
Shbak spent 18 years in jail for
fighting the Israeli occupation.
When he was released in 1990 he
formed an armed group known
as the Black Panthers, then fled to
Egypt.
Some of the exiled leaders
helped negotiate the plan for
Palestinian autonomy in the Gaza
Strip and West Bank town of Jeri
cho.
Autonomy was to begin April
13, but has been delayed by per
sistent snags in negotiations and
by the Feb. 25 massacre of 30
Palestinians in a Hebron mosque.
