This letter is in response to Ketan Sukkawala’s
letter concerning U-ACT’s (University Awareness
i for Cultural Togetherness) Asian participation and
| recruitment. Wc in U-ACT do believe that Asians
are a very important part of the A&M campus and
accordingly invited numerous organizations to
participate in our Student Leadership Retreat in
cluding the Asian-American Association, Viet
namese-American Student Association, and the
Philippine Student Association as well as offering
an open invitation to anyone in the International
Student Association. Unfortunately, many of these
students couldn’t go. I personally talked with
three representatives of ISA trying to get someone
to participate. Our advisor is the Asian-American
Association advisor, in addition to serving as the
staff representative for U-ACT
As for the statement that no Asians went on
the retreat, I am happy to inform you that your
information was wrong. There were two Asians
on the retreat, one Vietnamese-American who
is part of our coordinating staff, and another
who represented Aggie Leaders of Tomorrow
and who is also an active member of the Indian
Student Association. It is through the diversity
of our participants that we are able to promote
discussion on a topic that most people believe
they know enough about.
acted diplomatically and maturely. Does he not
know that being a Corps Commander requires
that he should be at least mature and diplomatic,
if not a leader of some sort? I agree with Har-
away’s beliefs, but I do not agree with his actions,
and he has tainted the Corps’ reputation, for
which I am saddened.

Tempers still hot over
Corps, elections issue
• Trent Ashby is going to be wearing Texas
A&M whites next year representing me and my
buddies, so I give him my full support. Whether I
voted for him or not is irrelevant. However, I was
thorouglily disgusted and disappointed Thursday
when I read The Battalion articles concerning the
Corps and the elections.
I have been in the Corps of Cadets for two
years now, and in the process I have learned disci
pline, respect and most important, I have learned
integrity. That is why it makes me so sick when I
read about someone like Todd Rice even begin to
question my integrity and the integrity of the
Corps (March 31, Mail Call). Todd Rice has no
right to make any comment about us because he
knows absolutely nothing about the Corps of
Cadets, nor does he have any idea what wc go
through here. He does not understand the love,
compassion or the pride that we have for Texas
A&M and the Corps.
It made me so frustrated to read the complete
ly biased articles in The Battalion just slamming
the Corps of Cadets, because there are so many of
us working over here to make sure that the Corps
has a good image and to say that we truly do live
up to the standard set by Lawrence Sullivan Ross

• I am writing in regard to the actions made
by Corps Commander Will Haraway concerning
the recent student elections. I Am a senior and in
my fourth year in the Corps of Cadets, so it
would not surprise anyone for me to say that I
also support a strong Corps presence in the stu
dent leadership of this school.
However, I have to disagree with the way Har
away has acted in his efforts to support Corps
candidates in elections. His memorandum con
cerning “non-reg” candidates was one of the
most unprofessional, ill-conceived actions he has
ever committed. First, using sarcasm in an official
Corps memo to criticize not only non-regs, but
CTs under his leadership, was enough to start an
tagonism internally.
Then, his public criticism of CTs who did not
share his views, as well as blatant and childish de
fense of his actions, showed me that he has not
ot ‘soldier, statesman and knightly gendeman.”
I have a challenge for Todd Rice, or anyone
else who is not in die Corps, but still feels they
should openly criticize us. We begin running at
6:05 a.m. and you arc more than welcome to
join us. I am sure my freshmen would love to
have you along.

In regard to the now famous "Bene|

election regulations states, “items passedod

Therefore the memo is not paraphernalnij

Article IV, Section IV also stales that all t

• When I read the front page of the Batt last
Thursday, I literally became sick to my stomach. I
never thought I would see the day I wasn’t proud
to have been a cadet in the Corps.
I spent my first three and a half years here at
A&M in the Corps, and wore my boots proudly
last semester. But now I am a non-reg living in
Walton. Many of you arc now saying, WFTY?
Well, one of the reasons is because I got
treated the same way Ross McGlothlin and Ray
Hernandez did by fellow Corps members. I am
sure they feel the same way I do now — be
trayed. I was removed as Commander of
Board hearing. Albeit this is the procedure!
forth in the Election Regulations, it isadirectvi
lation of a students' right to due process as jm
ed by Article V of the University Regulations.
The entire episode has uncovered two?
facts. One, the Election Commission needsli
recast its vague and often contradictory Htt
tion Regulations. Two, The Battalion needst
contain its blatant disregard for the truth;
defamatory opinions. If anyone is
ing” students, it is The Battalion anditspriti

Haraway.
