Fort Worth unveils designs for new
symphony, performing arts hall
The Associated Press

FORT WORTH — Designs for a
$60,000 million 2,000-seat down
town performance hall, which is ex
pected to become the new home of
nve Fort Worth arts groups, finally
will be unveiled Wednesday.
The principal users of the hall
will he the Fort Worth Symphony,
Fort Worth Opera, Fort Worth Bal
let, Van Cliburn Foundation and
Casa Manana Theater.
The arts groups are excited that
they are closing in on securing
first-class quarters after years of
disappointment.
We want a home,” said Ann
Koonsman, executive director of the
Fort Worth Symphony Association.
The symphony rehearses at a
south Fort Worth facility and per
forms at Fort Worth/Tarrant County
Convention Center’s JFK Theater.
The convention center was fin
ished in l 968 with the 3,054-seat
JFK Theater as a multiuse auditori-
pro
adequate acoustically, Ms. Koons
man said.
By the early l 980s, the Fort
Worth Symphony Association began
lobbying for a new hall with better
acoustics and easier access for per
forming arts groups.
The first proposal was a radical
renovation of the city-owned Will
Rogers Auditorium, with $20 million
of the $30 million cost being raised
through a municipal bond issue. The
proposal was defeated overwhelm
ingly at the polls in July 1990.
The new hall will be built with
foundation grants and private con
tributions under the leadership of
downtown developer Edward P.
Bass. The project was initiated with
two large initial gifts, totaling $28
million, from the Sid W. Richard
son Foundation and the Burnett-
Tandy Foundation.
In addition, Perry R. Bass, Ed
Bass’ father, donated the city block
sized site.
Recent gifts have broughttt:
fund-raising effort to a total of J]t|
million, said Patricia Schutts, dew
opment director for Performing Ar;
Fort Worth, the non-profit groups
charge of butWTng the hall.

Indian students can keep long hair, court says
The Associated Press
DALLAS — A federal appeals court has left in place a
lower court’s injunction allowing Alabama and Coushat-
ta Indian tribal members to follow their religion by
wearing long hair in the Big Sandy school district.
The U.S. 5th Circuit Court in New Orleans released its
decision Monday to remand the case for reconsideration in
light of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993,
which became a law after the case entered the courts.
The act was passed between the date of the district
court’s order and the oral argument of this case, the
rgi
judges wrote in their opinion filed last Thursday.
“The RFRA will plainly affect the district court s
analysis of ultimate relief in this case,” they wrote. ‘‘But
we, too, cannot ignore the significance of RFRA to a just
resolution of this appeal.”
About a fourth of the district’s 400 students ait
members of the Alabama-Coushatta tribe. Ten of them
filed the lawsuit.
After a federal court ruled in the students’ favoi,
the school district appealed it, saying they need the
hair-length policy and other dress codes to prevent
disruptions and to maintain an environment con
ducive to learning.
Telephone calls to the Big Sandy school district went
unanswered Monday evening.
Students say long hair means power, wisdom,
strength and a connection to the past. Many believe
hair snould be cut only when mourning the death ofi
close relative.
