The White House issued ■ new material after a iwsweek magazine story sug- ie Cfll!1] .sted Clinton did not invest any her own money. Newsweek has since backed off report. In October 19 79, Clinton de- jded to branch out and she jened a second account with vilio; $5,000 she had made in the initial investment, the documents sug gested. She opened it through her stockbroker Stephens Inc. in Little Rock, which the White House documents said traded commodity futures in cattle, soybeans, sugar, hogs, copper and lumber. Before she closed out this ac count in March 1980, she lost $560 in 1979 and $449 in 1980, the White House documents show. That showed her total loss on the second account to be $1009, roughly the same amount that she had invested initially. The White House statement characterized this as “small net losses.” The $560 loss in 1979 was subtracted from the $72,996 gain in the main account that year to produce a net gain in commodi ties trading in 1979 of $72,436. It has been previously reported that Clinton started trading cattle futures at the suggestion of James Blair, general counsel for the Arkansas-based Tyson Foods Inc.
