NEW YORK — Hakeem Olaju
won of the Houston Rockets, the
league’s third-leading scorer and
rebounder, was suspended by the
NBA for one game Monday for
hitting referee Bill Spooner in the
stomach during Sunday night’s
game in Phoenix.
Olajuwon will miss Houston’s
game Tuesday night in Sacramen
to.
The incident occurred with
7:26 left in the 1 13-98 loss. The
7-footer was gesturing at Spooner
to protest what he thought should
have been a foul on the Suns’ A.C.
Green when he struck the official.
Olajuwon was ejected two sec
onds after Dan Majerle scored on
an offensive rebound to put
Phoenix ahead 90-78. Olajuwon
had 2 I points, 1 1 rebounds and
five blocks.
"Spooner felt k shot in the solar
plexus. That caiYhappen with a
guy running by it can happen a
thousand ways, ’ said NBA super
visor of officials Darell Garretson,
who was at the game but did not
work it. “I think he knew he had
done something wrong by the
way he left the floor.”
Rockets coach Rudy Tom-
janovich said the team will abide
by the ruling.
‘‘But we want to emphasize
that Hakeem showed no malice, or
intended any harm toward the of
ficial,” said Tomjanovich. “It was
simply a gesture, and contact was
made. We do understand the
rules, and they must be enforced.”

out for Hamilton Tiger-
Hamilton has offered Richard
son, the Oilers’ third-team quarter
back behind Warren Moon and
Cody Carlson, a two-year contract
worth S 1 million. The Oilers have
offered him a three-year deal that
starts at $250,000.
Richardson attended the Tiger-
Cats’ quarterback camp over the
weekend in Phoenix.
“I threw about 30 balls, and they
liked what they saw,” he said. “They
explained to me why they think I
could be successful in the CFL. They
Cats, plans Canada trip
also like my running ability.”
The former Texas A&M star said
he and agent Frank Bauer met with
Hamilton’s owner, coach, personnel
director and offensive coordinator.
“Everything was great,” he said.
“We went out to dinner Saturday
night and talked football ... They’ve
followed my career, and they think
fd be ideal for their team.”
The Oilers are also in danger of
losing defensive ends Sean Jones
and William Fuller and receiver
Haywood Jeffires.

joy this night.”
He liked the way the Lakers
ambushed the Bucks from the
start in one
incredible
half, an adren
aline rush
from the
Johnson
opening jump
to a 6 6-3 5
lead, and the
way they re
sponded to a
fierce come
back in the
second half.
The lapse in
the middle, he knew, was from a
lack of stamina and unfamiliarity
with the new defense he in
stalled.
“We wore them down,” John
son said, “but we wore ourselves
down. The thing that caught up
to us was fatigue. I’m so proud of
the guys. To take one practice and
change the whole defensive
scheme, they weren’t used to it.
They did an excellent job. Mil
waukee came back like every pro
fessional team will. We have to
keep up the pressure to the end.”
He wants the Lakers so fit they
can pressure teams on defense
baseline to baseline, tipoff to
buzzer. He figures the Lakers
don’t have the size and strength
to win, so they must rely on
quickness, endurance and intelli
gence. Smart shots, clever passes,
keep legs and ball moving.
Johnson wants them running
the way the Lakers did when he
controlled the ball in Showtime.
He could use a guy like himself
on the roster. Controlling the
tempo from the sideline isn’t as
easy as it is on the court, espe
cially against better teams.
The Bucks are one of the worst
teams, losers of eight straight on
the road. Beating them by just
nine points in a sold-out Forum
and blowing most of a 36-point
third-quarter lead do not inspire
overconfidence. That means more
boot camp for the Lakers, who
remain six games behind Denver
for the eighth and final Western
Conference playoff spot with 1 5
/ games to go.
